Can someone help me see Federer at Wimbledon for the first time?
I booked the first week off in the hope to finally see Federer at Wimbledon.
I plan on going on Monday, Weds, Fri as they are the days he should (touch wood) be playing.
I think the only chance i have is to camp out on the Tuesday to get in for Weds as I am busy Sunday evening and cannot camp.
Thoughts?

Two guys stayed with us a few years ago and got into CC by 'camping' easy, so good luck. They did not even go excessively early - I was quite surprised.
Ever thought of trying Halle or Stuttgart?

Tough to see Federer live at Wimbledon all the way from Germany, barry.
Do it, luvsports. I’ve seen him there twice; losing to Berdych in 2010 (yuk) and a ceremonial win in the 1st round in 2013 against Hanescu (though maybe I curse him, he lost in the 2nd to Stakovski).
I’m going again this year, 1st round, because it’s the only certain way and who knows how many more times he’ll be there. Going with Mrs B and my two sons, both true believers. We hope for a great day, hope you’re in there somewhere!

Agree with BB - I've seen him lose to Henman in 2001, beat Kolschrieber in 2009, beat Youzhny in 2012, and beat Lajovic last year. What makes him stand out is that roughly 3 times every 4-5 games he does something that makes the whole crowd laugh because there's no other available reaction. Nobody else I've seen does that - with Nadal there are a few sharp intakes of breath, but not laughter in the same way.

Exactly, barry. I always try to side alongside court (my favourite place is opposite the Umpire, sitting between service line to baseline or a bit behind) rather than behind the serve because it's there you get the truest sense of the pace.
The one thing TV destroys is the sheer speed with which these guys have to do their stuff and with Federer what blows the mind watching live and in person is that he conceives of and executes these laughter-inspiring things in a fraction of a second.
Watching Federer in person from the side of the court is the single best sport-related thing I've ever experienced. Nothing has come close, and certainly when I saw Murray v Nadal at Wimbledon it was impressive but not like that.

Interesting. I much prefer to watch from the camera view or even better from right behind the middle line judge (as close as possible as one player in fact). That's where I see best how I would fare against those guys.
For having watched Federer a few times what impresses me most ....is that it's actually not very impressive! in the sense that he plays relaxed, none of his moves and shots seem to ask him particular effort or sweat...yet what the ball does is breathtaking....if you know what it takes to do it.

Oh I could tell you (any all other mere mortals) exactly how we'd fare against these guys without that!Tenez wrote:Interesting. Fair enough on Federer, I think the bottom line with him is that he's like Edward Witten, the foremost specialist in string theory; all the really big brain theorists whose grasp of the subject and the mathematics appears like pure magic to the rest of us say they feel like us when they deal with him. It's the same with Federer; guys who are among the top handful of players on the planet talk about Federer like we might about playing them. It's funny when someone like Berdych came off after the AO '17 encounter just laughing at the experience that when Federer brings it all to the Court he was no more than a participant, a stooge to allow Federer to show everyone what was possible.
I think that in a way it removes any resentment at getting completely spanked, they just accept that on his day that's what happens and it doesn't make them a bad player.

Well it's half past one now so .....luvsports! wrote:Thanks team. What time should i start camping?
Seriously, no idea as I did my time doing that a while back. Other members seem quite bullish about this but if it were me and I was making the big commitment and I didn't really have anything else to fill that day I'd plan on getting there first thing in the morning and if I'm stupidly early then so what? Just make sure I've brought something to do, and have copious supplies of water and whatever.

Hi LS,
I know it's not very helpful, but why on earth did you make no effort to see Fed when you worked in Wimbledon a few years ago?
At least a schmooze attempt!!!
A guy in my club who has no idea about tennis got tickets for the men's SF and he is going with his wife who probably doesn't even know the difference between tennis and badminton...
I offered to buy the tickets off him for a good price him but apparently the wife is "desperate" to "go to Wimbledon"...something to talk about in her office I guess....
It's criminal...
Amazingly, I got tickets for women's QF...in the second round of ballot...I'll go even though I couldn't care less about women's tennis.
So what can you do...if you want to see Fed badly enough you will see him!

I saw Fed three times in Wimbledon (Wimbledon 2012, then olympics final same year and 2015 final) and honestly, I had better enjoyment of his skill when I was watching him in O2 from very close up.
Unless you can watch him from row one to five in Wimbers, it's almost a waste of time in my opinion....you'll see him play but not the magic when you are really close....and you can really get those tickets if you camp.
So go and camp!!!
I haven't done it so I can't tell you how early you need to go, but logically, you shouldn't need to camp more than one night.
Ring Wimbledon about that, they should be able to help, I'm sure.
