Fabio has hot white hot moment going 15:40 down on his serve, banging the ads earning warning from the umpire.

What does he do?

Serves an ace.
And then levels to deuce.

FOR-ZA! FOR-ZA!

And as he reaches advantage point, he takes in some air, looks at the crowd and grows an inch or two!

Thiem is hitting the ball so hard he is probably starting to wear the rubber off.

And Fabio breaks!!!!!!!

Fabios serving for the match. New balls. How appropriate!

Finally a decent match this clay season.

Fabio's heart and skill beat Thiem whose muscle and unartistic game was not enough today despite playing quite well.

I don't care about Nadal.
Never liked him and unlike you, never thought he was good for tennis.

I simply don't watch him unless he is playing someone who can beat him.

Pietrangelli court with its statues and pine trees is still looking old, soulful and fabulous.
Just caught last two games, easy win for Nole.

I think Fognini has more chance to knock Nadal out in Rome than Thiem.

Anyway, maybe even Shapo can make his life difficult if he beats Haase.

Though, as I just went to see the draw on the ATP site I saw this headline:

"Nadal entering beast mode"

Bless his tired, declining socks....Laugh

But that is what I call nadal bluffing. Cause a big aspect of his game is to show that he can go on for ever at a crazy cadence.....which he usually can...but quite often we see him hit the wall. he goes from Beast to Beaten in strange fashion.

I'd like to see Nadal beaten by being outplayed, not hitting physical wall.

That's where Fognini comes in.
And I am very curious how Shapo would do despite all the obvious disadvantages.

Great tennis from Shapo, what a talent!

Nadal team spying in the crowd. Winking

With this year's experience and confidence (he is beginning to even look cocky), Shapo should be a force in Wimbledon.

Looks like Edmund has the same 400 friends & family to play in front of.

If I were him I’d be getting the idea the organisers don’t like me.

First class tennis between Shapo and Haase.

Haase throwing a kitchen sink at Shapo, working his socks off just to win a point and stay afloat.

Many fantastic shots.

Percentage, what percentage? Whistle

What is also nice to see is this bountiful energy oozing out of every Shapo's pore.

His young body is running like there is no tomorrow. Opposite of Fed who plays with the pressure of conserving precious freshness commodity.

Full of sprite!

This is the best tennis I've seen on clay this season.

Wonderful as it is to see Shapo enjoy himself and give 100% out of his gorgeous talent and youth, he needs to be careful not to injure himself.

He'll learn. Hug

I find the conditions in Rome very slow. I thought it used to be considered a "fast clay" but clearly it is the slowest clay tournament I have seen so far. Probably too much clay and humid weather.

What a win for Shapo!
His BH was outstanding. Applause

I’ve never seen Haase play so well all match. He must’ve badly wanted a crack at Nadal, too. Winking

Anyway, we get to see a Shapo-Nadal at about 3-4 pm tomorrow.

Typical of Thiem. I didn't see the match, so not sure about how he performed, Fognini with all the crowd could perhaps wanked his head off.

And  again the pattern stays. So the positive thing is the next tournament is RG and lets hope he is high on it.

When? I remember Rome has always been discussed as typical 'slow' clay. Are you confusing it with Madrid?

Very tough test for Nole. For me, Ramos is tougher for him than Nadal atm. So if he survives Ramos, Nole os def ready for RG.

Edmund will finally have more than 400 of his friends and family in the stands today and I hope he blasts Zverev away.

I look forward to another Fabio opera, this Gojkowiz seems to be popping up in draws recently...

I hope Shapo has recovered from last night’s lavish energy waste and will fight to the bitter end.

A question: who will like the fast day conditions more - him or Nadal?

Ramos hasn't had much form recently. I guarantee you that if Nole and Nadal get through...the score v Ramos will look easier than v Nadal.

Yes. I'll back up Edmund.

A question: who will like the fast day conditions more - him or Nadal? Shapo will hate the higher bounce for sure.

Shapo was dealing with all the high balls on his BH from Haase really well last night, I was impressed.

Good thing he is a lefty so Nadal won’t have the luxury of going for it with his heavy FH spin. monster

WTF? I come on this forum maybe once every 6-8 months and see rubbish like this comment? If Djokovic and Nadal get to each other, Nadal will crush Djokovic. Djokovic isn't in good enough form yet to beat Nadal on clay. What are you smoking? And no, Djokovic will not be ready for this RG. He's got a long way to go to contend for that title. Jeez, what is it you watch? It certainly isn't tennis. Ramos is tougher for Djokovic than Nadal is? Keep ingesting those psychotropic drugs.

Carry on the lunacy.  Doh

I am not sure the Italians are desperate to see Nadal go through another beasty mode day. If they can make it close, they will, especially v Shapo. In Madrid of course it was important to keep him going...in Rome too but probably not as much.

I don't think Thiem will be able to take three sets off Nadal on Chatrier. It's one thing to do it in Madrid or Rome and another to do it at RG. I just can't see it. Same with Zverev. Who does that leave? Djokovic isn't in good enough form yet and there's nobody else who can play elite level clay set over five sets. I'd be shocked if Nadal lost this RG.

Sport is full of surprises which means Nadal could beat Djoko in Rome Winking

More seriously, Nadal beating him is not a done deal. It seems clear that the main problem Djoko was having lately was confidence and confidence can return quickly. More importantly, Djoko will very much fancy the challenge of playing Nadal to see how he measures up to the best on that surface. The pressure will be on Nadal, not Djoko...so if indeed he recovers a bit of confidence, an upset in on the card.

And  again the pattern stays. So the positive thing is the next tournament is RG and lets hope he is high on it.

I said 'hope', not said I was certain that Thiem will beat Nadal on RG. I know its different to beat him at RG, but given the field we have, who else can you pick?

Thiem has taken 2 sets of him, maybe he can take 3 at RG.

I just think that Nole has an amazing gene/instinct for survival/refusal to lie down, that gives me hope and probably clouds my judgement.

Sport is full of surprises which means Nadal could beat Djoko in Rome Winking

I am actually not even that bothered with Nole any more...but I wouldn’t want to see Nadal beat him unless he is ready to face him.

Yes, confidence is a big factor, but even more so match fitness, the physical side of it.

Seriously, there is no better fun in tennis than watching Fabio play in Rome.

It's deeply wonderful.

Even a wrong linecalll can turn into a earth-quaking moment of tragedy.

And when he majestically hits a winner, you know...the last milisecond wrist whip, ooooh mamma mamma miaaaaaa. There are no winners ever so childlikely welcomed by a crowd anywhere in the world.

I loooooooooovvvvve it! love  love  love

And Fabio just wins first set. Flat or round, the Earth is still safe! Big Grin
