Federer's best years on HC

Post by Tenez on Tue Mar 06, 2018 10:32 am

Here below in an interesting article about Federer's success on HC, and in particular his best years.

Year W-L Rate Year W-L Tour-Level Hard-Court Titles
2005 98.0 % 50-1 8
2006 96.7 % 59-2 9
2004 92.0 % 46-4 7
2017 90.9 % 40-4 5
2014 88.7 % 55-7 4
What is interesting there is that it shows he was most dominating on that surface from 2004 to 2006. but not 2007 onwards , Even his 2014 season seems to have a better ration that 2007-2013. And of course being able to pick and choose now makes him a more successful player than even 2014.

The reason 2007 is not on the list I guess is that he started to lose there against the new lung busting generation.

As the article points out, Fed is now on a 52/4 record since his return....making it better than 2004.

As impressive as those numbers are, I still think he is a very fragile player and those amazing streaks could quickly come to an end. Fingers cross we have another year of it.

Yes - maybe not "very", but certainly more fragile than he appears to be when he is flowing. The main fragility is that back - which no doubt he keeps a very careful eye on, but still can have a mind of its own. To my mind that is the clearest possible reason why he should not go anywhere near a competitive clay-court match.

Can you find out who he lost to in 2007?

not quite. Canas twice, Djoko once, Nalbandian 1....but not to #nadal and Murray. Yet I see canas in teh same league as teh RRunners. He even was busted for it.

so a 46/4 w/l ratio of 92%.

I only remember his losses to Nole in Montreal (no lungbusting tennis in that match) and to Murray in Shanghai (WTF) where Federer played with an injured back and even had an MTO.

And that means their table above (OP) is wrong.....unless they don;t count the indoors as HC. Not sure.

The Murray match was 2008.

He lost twice to Nalbandian I thought that indoor season - Madrid and Paris - Nalbandian won both of them, in one of them he beat both Fed/Nadal.

Nalbandian really should have won a slam.

Yes It says he lost twice to Nalby and so did Nadal.

but the one I didn;t count either was Gonzo in the Masters. So his record is 45/6 with a 88% w/l ratio. Hence the table is right!
