ATP Masters 1000: SHANGHAI, SEMI-FINAL
Fabulous day of tennis ahead with Shanghai semi-finals producing best possible match-ups:
Starting at 9.30 AM UK time
DJOKOVIC - BERDYCH
followed by
FEDERER - MURRAY
starting at 1 PM UK time
I haven't seen Berdych play in Shanghai, but have seen plenty of Nole and expect nothing less than a win.
Federer vs Murray closer to call as both looked below their best, still Federer looked better, so I'll pick him in 3.

I've just realised that this is Federer & Murray first match since that Olympics 3 set drubbing, mmmmm... veeery interesting!
I noticed that Murray's serve was pretty average in Shanghai. That is probably going to make all the difference tomorrow.

It could be a good test for Murray's claim to reach number one.

You're right!
No other way around it but to keep beating those ranked above you.
I was wondering if Federer would be motivated for Shanghai, as he has basically achieved everything he kind of wanted for this year, but surely, a bit of squaring the Olympic bill should be enough, remember that TMC round robin match in Shanghai before it became Masters 1000 ?

I think Fed is always motivated as long as he is fit. He might dread the travelling to Shanghai but once there I cannot see why he would not give it 100%. Everytime I suspected him to tank was for physical, exhaustion reasons.

When I say motivated I mean RG 2011 or Wimbledon 2012 motivated, he played out of this world in those two matches (he needed to).

Re: ATP Masters 1000: SHANGHAI, SEMI-FINAL
Murray losing the first set to Stepanek bodes well for Federer's chances against Murray. Although he pulled away from Wawrinka after losing the first set, he will not have that luxury against Murray.
Berdych has been playing well and can take it to Djokovic. I thought Berdych played well against Tsonga.
I am expecting a Murray-Djokovic final.

Finally will get to watch some tennis again. Watched a bit of Nole-Haas this morning until the first break but nothing else yet this week.
Nole is playing too early for me - I would wake up for it if it were the AO, but not here. But Roger vs Andy is perfect time - will be having breakfast while watching.
I also expect Murray-Djokovic final, but would prefer Roger in the final.

I cannot see Berdych bothering Djoko in that kind of form.
I am hoping Federer Murray can be a more open match.

Very strange to see Djokovic not closing sets and get so uptight.

I hope its obvious to those watching how much spin Djoko puts on the ball.

Yesterday, Federer passed Cilic. The ball was roughly 6 ft above the net and landed 2-3 ft inside the baseline. It was very interesting to see such a shot from Federer as well.
All these guys have very good racquet head control and pretty good timing to be able to do that.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: SHANGHAI, SEMI-FINAL
Yes Fed has certainly added a lot of spin to his FH too from 2007. This is what has allowed him to keep up with the younger generation....even beaten by them from 2007 to 2009, he was able to stay close. I remember when I was discussing this back then and thought that was due to lack of confidence down to his new racquet but obviously he had other plans. He developed a safer FH while still keeping his attacking FH when needed on rarer occasions.
For having used nat gut all my life untill 2008 I perfectly understand the effect of new strings when I finally made the change. Your flat FH suddenly becomes more secure without losing any pace. In the past the flat FH was a risky shot whereas with new strings it simply became safer. You could still hit flat with teh new string but a touch of spin made it more secure. However playing against players like Nadal who hit with tons of spin, the timing became harder and hitting flatter, even with new strings became more risky so there was no choice to add extra spin, at the cost of having to having longer rallies.
The equation is simple flat FH/Short/risky rallies on one side and at the extreme side, huges pin/long /safer rallies. All players find the balance between those 2 in which they feel comfortable.
Federer though he plays with more spin nowadays has a better fell for the ball and can find the line and angles better than anyone (probably a gutsier player as well).
The main difference when watching Federer v Djoko FH is that Djoko's racquet face is closer to Djoko's body, more perpendicular to the court surface whereas Federer's is further away from him with racquet face more prarllel to the court surface. Therefore one puts clearly more spin on the ball whihc is also normal when conidering their FH grip.

Did not see Nole's match, but the score would seem to suggest it was more one-sided than I expected.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: SHANGHAI, SEMI-FINAL
Finally at the computer, just in time to see Murray's set point.
Apparently Fed served three double faults in a row ?!!!
Saw the end of first (from 5:1 to 5:2) and end of second set of Nole Bird match on a massive TV in the gym, I take it Nole continued to play in good form judging from that 5:1 in the first set.
Now back to THIS one, come on Rog!

Tricky one. Could be. Should give him benefit of the doubt, he doesn't want to slip or play with the stress of potentially more rain coming at such important stage of the match. I've seen worse

I don't mind it esp if it gives us a 3 set thriller
I didn't get to see much of Nole Berd match, so looked forward to a bit of drama i this one. From what I saw it looks similar to the Olympic final, Murrray outpowering Fed, bludgeoning his backhand shamelessly Reading Feds' serve well on top.
I can't wait to see what Fed cooks up for when they come back.

Despite Feds gamesmanship, I actually enjoyed it. I like a bit of spice in the rivalry. Andy's reactions to losing a point on the service game that followed was brilliant

Nole's on the other hand is fully in this one, I expect a fiery win for him tomorrow

Could be some gamesmanship. But when nothing is working, everything seems to be conspiring against you and starts to bother you. Rain drop on a Hard court is dangerous, but it was light and playable. But Fed was annoyed with his play, and that's what was annoying him more than the rains.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: SHANGHAI, SEMI-FINAL
Fed's main goal was the 300 which he got. Though I won't say he tanked, he looked frustrated at time especially in that very long game where he had to save 7 BPs. His game was off, he basically played the whole match with the 2nd serve. Possible if he was playing after a long break.
Murray was guessing Fed's serve's direction very well, Looks like he and his team has done some good homework. Good play from Murray.
