Shapovalov vs Tsonga going to 5th set. Shapovalov looked better for most of the match but Tsonga stepped it up towards the end of the 4th set and Shapovalov's lack of experience showed in some of his shot selection. Not the best quality match, but quite entertaining. Hopefully Shapovalov can win.

Tsonga wins. He played smarter tennis in the critical moments and won mostly on experience. Too bad, I was hoping for a Shapovalov vs Kyrgios match in the next round.

Sleeveless when you are 32 and getting bald....is not quite the same as when you are 18 with long dark hair.

but he break back while nadal was serving for the match with a superb BH.

It's hopeless for Mayer but if he can make Nadal run....that's good.

Rublev seems to have tatooed his arm.

It does not prevent him from whacking returns and win that first set.

Bagdhatis is a bit heavy and too slow for Rub's shots. It shows how much the game evolved since Baghdatis reached that final here 11 years ago?

Rublev is wearing the same outfit as Tiafoe yesterday, it is vile!

To think. That someone must have gone to a prestigious art design school to come up with such atrocity.

I hooe Fed does not wear that Nike horror.

I only saw part of the 3rd set with Nadal but thought the same flaws are there to be exploited.

He's standing ridiculously far back on serve, anyone with the ability to serve with range would have huge margins to go for.

He was able to be exposed by hard hitting.

Impossible to say but SHBH Mayer was troubling Nadal and Nadal did not even bother getting to some balls. It is fastish...but comparing is not possible...unless there is a huge difference.

Yes, they turned the their slam into travesty.

I don’t remember a single decent match, whereas look how good and watchable all AO matches are.

Even in Kyrgios Troicki match where aces are booming left right and centre.

I can’t imagine dull long ralies from 2009- 2012 here any more.

I did not watch the end of Bagh Rublev but it seems players find it hard to keep running versus Rublev. He is forcing long rallies at a much higher pace than nadal, Murray and Djoko were. After ferrer, Bagh gets double broken in the last set.

He just looks more confident and relaxed.

Very different from the last year’s version.

OK, squeezes past 8-6 in the 5th but if Federer were in Nadals position in the draw I'd be laughing my head off.

It's bizarre when you consider the Sampras/Agassi period when the USO was the fast surface that Sampras beat Agassi on, and the AO was the slow surface that Agassi beat Sampras on and Courier won on twice.

I know which surface I prefer - coupled with the fact that the AO tends to have less injury problems than the USO most seasons, it may be moving off its traditional turf as the clear #4 in terms of prestige.

One thing Fed fans should be worried about concerning his overall slam record is the nature of the show that is sport nowadays, or was it always such?

It is clear that the tennis business will be in search of new records, new sensations, new barriers to break, once Federer retires. People want t to be "part of history" (the new big phrase) and what would the next  big record to break, the next most attainable milestone, history maker? Nadal catching on Fed's record. I would therefore not be surprised if slam TDs were not doing their best to facilitate that event like the |USO, AO and Wimbledon slowed down their slams to allow their own Fedal finals. This is what people wanted to watch...and that is what they were given.

Let's see whether the AO will keep its pacy surface once federer is done.

Worth having a look at the up-and-coming Australian players too - I reckon, for example, that a faster surface may suit Kyrgios.  I don't know what the story is on the Women's side, so they may keep it fast.  They must have had a reason for going faster after generally being the slower HC slam.

I guess a 6 hour final helped a bit.
Besides: who wants to play on sticky court during one of the hottest tournaments of the year? The other 2 tournaments played under exceptionally warm conditions usually have quite fast courts (Dubai and Cinci).
To me it seemed they started to slow the AO down after 2007 and it became a retirement fest ever since. So they had to adjust sometime.

The 'big' change was "rebound ace" (green) to "plexicushion" (blue) from 2007-2008.  They apparently re-surface the courts every year.  This Daily Mail article  is informative, subject to the caveat that Tournament Organisers always say the same thing about surfaces. - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/aap/article-5237279/No-change-Australian-Open-court-speed.html.  Other articles talk about changes to the balls &c &c - it's the usual stuff.

Tiley does say this, The guy does say this, suggesting that they like the surface they currently have:

But he says there has been no change to the annual resurfacing process and players should expect the courts to be the same "medium-fast" pace of last year.
Tiley also believes the pace on offer at Melbourne Park enhances the overall spectacle by catering to a variety of playing styles.
"The speed encourages that," Tiley told AAP"

Yes Tiley is right but imagine Nadal get to 18 or even 19 GS, would not he love to have "history" on his slam and help Nadal get to 19/20 slams by suddenly offering if not a different surface, good draw or bouncy balls?

Perhaps the best thing is to learn not to care about who ends up with the most slams..?

Do you think the players themselves are as obsessed with their slam tallies as their fans are?

I kind of think that each of Fedal wants pretty badly to be the guy with the most slams when they hang up their respective racquets.

Indeed it's good to put things in perspective and this is only tennis. However, tennis, and Federer in particular, gave me roughly 15 years of great, positive emotions on balance and it would spoil it all if Nadal ended winning more slams.

Do you think the players themselves are as obsessed with their slam tallies as their fans are?
I think so. They care about being number 1..so they care about being number 1 for ever (highest slam count).

I kind of think that each of Fedal wants pretty badly to be the guy with the most slams when they hang up their respective racquets.
Of course. It is the fight of their life.

Just read about the biggest choke ever! (correct me if I’m wrong)

Fett was 5:1, 40:15 inna deciding set against Wozniacki, and yes, she managed to lose!!!

That's bad. It will take time to recover. Most annoying as I had chosen Fett to beat Woz iif I remember.
