Federer taps in BBC award
Pretty much a tap in for Fed there who surpasses Ali & Bolt with a 4th BBC award.
Not exactly a big deal but it underlines how much goodwill there is towards the Maestro.

Yes, there is only one Maestro.
And reading:
https://www.sport24.co.za/Tennis/ATPTour/federer-next-season-wont-be-my-last-20171214
gave this grey day a cheerful start.
“I currently intend to continue to play for a longer period, hopefully for a few more years,
Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open are cornerstones, everything which lies between we'll take it from there.
We'll only step on court if we are 100 percent fit,
....
I wonder how (Novak) Djokovic, (Andy) Murray, (Stan) Wawrinka, (Kei) Nishikori and (Milos) Raonic will come back,
That will have an impact. I'm assuming that one of those players will also tear up ropes.
I won't probably live the same emotions as 2017. But I have been able to surprise myself for all these years, so I hope to have good moments again.
It's (2017) been a massive year - perhaps my favourite! If 2018 is half as successful, then I'll be happy."
So clearly wants to keep Nadal’s pursuit of slam hauling in check.
And maybe even take part in the next olympics, wherever they are...

Yes it is good. Though the competition (shortlisted by the BBC) was not too fierce on that occasion.
I am not surprised it is "perhaps his favorite year". Beating Nadal 4 times has a lot to do with it. I suspect had he managed to stay healtthy last summer and eneded up number 1, it certainly would have been his best year!

I dunno about Federer, but that AO 2017 was certainly my facourite slam of his.
Ot was in alesgue of its own.
No wonder he took Norman to the mountain top!

Re: Federer taps in BBC award
The AO was very hard, Wimbledon in hindsight was easy (though what a tragedy it could have been had Berdych sneaked those tie-breaks!). There's no comparison in accomplishment but Wimbledon was all about #8 and so on, it was a career accomplishment rather than an annual one.
Yes, the sadness of the Cincinnatti back, without which #1 would have been more or less a shoo-in. Ah well.....
The competition for the BBC award was truly dire (though forced to some extent by the desperate need to be "diverse"). I bet Federer got something like 85% of the votes, with the remainder driven by SJW impulses. To be honest I could only have imagined Nadal being a fair competition but even then it wouldn't have been close.

Btw, what is the value of this “title” or award?
Do they exist in other countries?

Re: Federer taps in BBC award
Nothing really, the BBC has done a Sports Personality for a British sportsman award for many decades and it has some respect for sure. They have done an Overseas award too and winning this Federer has become the only person to win it four times.
Djokovic and Nadal each won it once.

Re: Federer taps in BBC award
I suppose this is more for the UK.
The ones I remember meant something at the end of the year were “Golden boot” for best footballer and Sportsman of the year by L’Equipe.
And now I suppose Laureus Award has decent weight.
But the most globally acknowledged awards are probably winners of:
Wimbledon
World Cup in football
Olympic 100m race
The rest is more or less just padding.
p.s.
And of course, who becomes “Sir” !

And of course another long distance asthmatic runner won the BBC award. People are so gullible.

My mum felt he deserved it
Can't say it was a stellar list. Ennis-Hill lifetime achievement? Lovesacks!

Re: Federer taps in BBC award
What was once an interesting "event" has become a virtue signalling irrelevance. I wasn't even sure they'd made clear Federer had won his "award", just some slo-mo balletic rehash from Wimbledon. The team of the year was an opportunity for the BBC to ram home it's obsession with womens sport by making the England Ladies the winners (who?).
They used to properly tour all sports and focus on big things, now it's become a tour through the contenders with cringeworthy voice-overs. The constant reference to "our Bianca" for the taekwondo girl and the insulting stereotype that scousers all fight surely took the prize this year.
The only good part was watching the whole thing descend into chaos near the end. Utter crap, kill it off now.

Re: Federer taps in BBC award
if Federer admitted he was a Trump supporter, all the awards would dry up quicker than a feminist's fanny [vagina for non Brits ]. That's what it's all about these days... politics and left wing bullshit.

Re: Federer taps in BBC award
Agree with most of this. I used to really enjoy SPOTY but it feels like they've really dumbed it down. As you say, they seemed to jump straight from the Overseas to whatever the next award was and it was just a whistle stop tour of the main contenders.bogbrush wrote:What was once an interesting "event" has become a virtue signalling irrelevance. The fact Farah was in London (clearly assuming he wasn't winning) and the line went down was all very entertaining though!
