500 are the worst tournaments. 5 matches in a 7 days for half the points of TMS.

Thiem may be seeded No 2 @ Vienna, but he is far from being the second favorite (as he can't play on HC):Jahu wrote:Vienna pretty good with Zverev/Thiem 1 and 2.

Shapo is so good!
Can’t decide what’s better: his FH or his BH.

But it is not turf, it is cement
Joke aside, Thiem is rare player with huuuge difference in winning pcts on different surfaces:
Overall 61.3% (166-105)
Hard 52.9% (72-64)
Clay 73.0% (81-30)
Grass 54.2% (13-11)
Thiem results on hard in 2017 (no one past QF):
Shanghai Masters R32
Tokyo R32
Chengdu R16
US Open R16
Cincinnati Masters QF
Canada Masters R32
Washington R16
Miami Masters R64
Indian Wells Masters QF
Acapulco QF
Rotterdam QF
Sofia R16
Australian Open R16

Good observation. I am not surprised he did better on grass than HC since grass was slower...that first week.mcekovic wrote:Jahu wrote:Who is forecasting these?

Thanks for the stats, I think he burned himself last year too playing too much, lets see how much he got in the tank for year end.

Burnout is not his problem, not the biggest one. He is just not comfortable with his game on Hard courts.

Good start for Fed delivering a serious beat down to the guy who took two sets off him at the USO.

Re: Basel 2017
Yes I saw it and Fed could even have won that first set 60. 1h for 2 sets that's good. If he walks to the final he might even play Paris. Way to go though,.

Re: Basel 2017
If he wins this he'll play Paris, especially so if there's a sniff of problems for Nadal.
This is it for #1, it's now or never.

Re: Basel 2017
He can win basel and make final of Paris (assuming Nadal goes out early)... but that will set him a larger task for the finals. Mathematically, it would still be very possible. But as of now, I think Fed's chances are slim. But he still has a shot at it.

Re: Basel 2017
I have only seen highlights of Federer’s matches this week.
He is playing brilliantly.
His time spent with the larger frame is paying dividends finally...like a snowball effect.
Basel conditions are also suiting him and the fact he is facing decent players, not energy suckers.
His fitness, footspeed, agility look amazing.
Recently, I have paricularly enjoyed his BH stop volleys.
How he tames those fast groundstrokes and drops/cuts the ball dead within a metre of the net...
He is so happy in Basel.

Re: Basel 2017
I was just enjoying how freely and super relaxed he was playing...but Manna is a crafty, great player, light on his feet and quick hands...Federer got himself into a Donskoy moment.

Re: Basel 2017
Very hard for Fed to reach #1 this year. I think his best chance would be next year during the clay court season - but he would still need to play well between now and then, and hope that Rafa's form is off next spring. Given that Fed is 36 and Rafa "only" 31, I do not know how likely that is.

Re: Basel 2017
But he might not have to. He would need to (a) play well from now through Miami (maybe not as well as this year, but still quite well) and (b) hope that Rafa's spring, including clay, looks more like 2015 or 2016 than 2017.

Fed was complacent last night, a few games rushing for no reason, a little nervous and shouting, that Manarino is a pure robotic sore.

Some of the words being used for Fed play:
- Ridiculous
- My goodness
- Amazing
- Can you believe it
Is Fed on drugs?

I missed the first set. Fed was in total control in the second. I did not think he played absolutely fantastic but whenever he needed to, he easily stepped it up.

Just saw the highlights...that was pure thrill. A sublime thrill.
The FH looks...I don’t know how to describe it...it’s heart-stopping.
A few minutes after seeing the clip and typing this I am still recovering!

Re: Basel 2017
A very decent final today.
Federer said he looks forward to playing a fit and healthy (maybe a little tired) Delpo.
Again, another fascet of him as a tough player (this time outside the court), so cunning and sharp...I just wish he was that brave when it came to Nadal.
(had to say it!)
“I'm ready for a difficult match and a fully fit del Potro ( ) He played a great match against me in Shanghai and went on to win Stockholm and won that.
Now he's here in the final again. I think he's ok. He might be tired, but he doesn't have issues that would keep him away from the court."
But I’ll be watching it only if it rains at 2pm. Playing the game still takes prescedence over watching it!

Re: Basel 2017
I just read that Delpo beat Federer TWICE in Basel finals.
(ooo-la-laaaa!)
(And that if he wins today he overtakes Busta in the race.)
And being the crafty Argie, he doesn’t hold back in his pre-match “talk” either!
"For me it's going to be a great challenge and also a great pleasure to play against Roger again in his hometown. It will be a great atmosphere, and I will enjoy it a lot."
All in al, this promises to be one really good match!
I wonder if they were aware of who said what, and of so, who started “it”?
Or maybe I am reading too much into it all?

I still cannot believe how well Delpo has been doing without BH. I think Fed should win very easily but somehow he has needed three sets the last time they played, so who knows.

Delpo is now hitting through many more of his BHs. Some of them with quite serious pace. If his wrists are good enough to handle it, he could win some big things next year.

Re: Basel 2017
I saw the first three games and the TB.
Fed very nervous, no first serve, no FHDTL which were the trademark all week.
Not sure why.

From what I saw he is just pushing them back into play -short, slow and very put-away-able by Fed...except he is not putting them away.summerblues wrote:Delpo is now hitting through many more of his BHs. Imeven thought he was tanking...
But Fed breaks and wins the second set!
