Asian Swing 2017: Bejing/Tokyo & Shanghai

Post by noleisthebest on Tue Oct 03, 2017 8:43 am

Atp 500 tournaments in Beijing and Tokyo this week, Masters 1000 in Shanghai next.

It looks like all uninjured players except Federer are playing this week, Nadal clearly wanting to cement his number one position.

This has been such an extraordinarily strange tennis year, I hope this last quarter does
not end up looking like USO '17...

In Bejing, Kurgios and Fognini are of course NOT in Nadal's half. Winking

Hopefully half injured Pouolle can make him run this morning.

Well Muller brought his season to an end due to injury.

Carwreck of a season. I doubt the young and upcomers would've had a better opportunity than 2017 to seriously mount a maiden slam victory.

And yet only Zverev was able to take 2 TMS but not even a Slam QF. Thiem isn't certain to win even an ATP250 right now.

Indeed a broken tennis season coming to a complete rot after wimbledon.

Lucas playing well.

Easy flat hitting power, compared to super muscled shots of Nadal who is allowed to take as much time as he pleases.

He's just enriched his repertoire of buying extra time by using ball-kids - he needs to see 2-3 balls before keeping the two he already has in his hand.

I suppose unlike most, he'd choose the fluffiest ones! Laugh

Shapo is the only young player with guts.
We can expect great things from him. The rest are useless.
Kyrgios is talented but a Thick Nick, A. Zverev is gutless and boring,  Thiem is safe and doped, Rublev is thick and 1d...and Goffin is just a bit emotional and physically fragile, if he can be counted as "young".

Tiafoe looks like he is only happy to take part

Oh I agree. It was hampered field for the most part this year and yet he couldn't muster a single Slam QF.

I kinda expect a resume to normal service next season. The frustrating thing is Thiem has most of the game to do well in the current conditions and struggles massively when up against free flowing opponents. Zverev is either I will bash them off court of submit when someone bashes more intelligently. Shapovalov seems the only player with the game to be a major threat.

The USO was a peach for the likes of Thiem and Zverev and they fluffed it.

Katchanov is another waste of space kind of "talent".

My returning is better than his!

Not to mention whacking the FHs like a maniac when all he needs is placement.

It's all great to have that serve and FH power on paper, but that paper goes up in flames quick in matches.

Well, you know I'm right:

Nadal has draws rigged for him, courts slowed down, Spanish judge ordering positive doping blood tests to be destroyed, he bans umpires he doesn't like, abuses rules, conditions TDs what size of balls they must provide for him...as Daniel said nicely - outside those niche conditions he'd be nowhere...

But, you are so in love with Nadal and addicted to feel-good moments he brings you, you'd rather not acknowledge the obvious.

Your choice.

Poor results from Kashanov though. He should be able to blast Nadal off court by now. Cilic could do that years ago and a few powerful players did.

I was going to watch Rubi-Zverev, but glad I didn't, Rubi getting thrashed...
He is as 1d as Zverev, except that Zverev is gutless and hence more successful! Sad

But!!!
Rubi is now ranked 36th...maybe there is hope for him in a few years time.

yes he stalls versus good retrievers. just shows how the game evolved in the last decade. I saw an 18shot rally between those 2. Rubi has such thin legs and arms... quite somthing to be that highly ranked for what seems a poor athlete.

Now that you put it like that, it's more bearable, though with the tour being aged, many players have mastered the skill to keep the ball in play long enough to make Rubi lose heart.

I look forward to this Next Hen WTF in Milan. Rubi and Shapo should be there.

If it wasn't for Fed, it would be more itnteresting than the "real" WTF.

Yes, potentialy good semis:

Nadal-Dimitrov
&
Kyrgios-Zverev

In Tokyo:

Cilic-Manna
&
Goffin-Schwartzman

Zverev and Cilic are the boring ones for me, so hope they get knocked out.

With Nadal, mthere is always that thrill of potentially seeing him beaten. Big Grin

Yes, the two are complete opposites.
Kyrgios has great, soft hands & flair when innthe mood and Zverev is an automat.

Kyrgios needs a little more discipline in his game, though...and ...

if he took that 1kg of bling around his neck maybe he'd be able to straighten his posture and walk like a man!

and yet another hardcourt final for the claycourter, 5th HC final of the year

kyrgios is a massive threat, as he is a great server and has lots of talent, but nadal is having a good week, so nice final ahead.

their road to the final:

pouille, khachanov, isner, Dimitrov, Kyrgios

basilashvili, M. Zverev, Darcis, A. Zverev, Nadal

it was a great tournament with lots of top players
