Re: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
This would stop the stamina freaks from tiring opponents out so much if it came to main tour. This is a good step in the right direction.

Does not sound bad? Whats the prob?
Better attacking player to win quicker then a moonballer runner 5h matches.

There are far better ways to solve than than removing all the twists and complexity from the sport.AceofDeath wrote:Death of tennis is when stamina freaks outlast attacking/s+v players.bogbrush wrote:Death of tennis.

This is the key paragraph:
=======================================================
"The rule changes, aimed at creating a high-tempo, cutting-edge, and TV-friendly product, are geared towards attracting new and younger fans into the sport, while at the same time retaining the sport’s traditional fan-base."
=======================================================
The glorious, lush game of tennis is being turning into 99p pot noodles.
After watching 5 set slam finals featuring Federer, we shall be reduced to penalty shoot-outs by the likes of Kyrgios, Fritzes, Zverev etc...

All these changes coming because of TV rights...i.e. Americans.
Fast food, fast tennis.
Maybe I am exhaggerating, but why else have all,these changes been proposed?
Can you seriously imagine tennis played without then"let", first to 4 in a set etc...
They are inventing a new sport.

It's only a trial. Once they see the next gens can't grasp it, it will disappear. Look at the flop that was the ITPL. Stick with tradition.

I agree.
Too many changes at once. A couple I could live with - like the shot clock and limiting the warm up to exactly 5 mins - but others are ridiculous.
With tie-breaks at 3-3, you can guarantee that most sets will end with tie-breaks. It changes the whole dynamic of the match. One break of serve and the set is essentially over.
I wonder who comes out with these ideas and how they agree them? Do they canvas opinion amongst fans, because if they did, I'm pretty sure they would've got a negative reaction.

Re: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
sounds like its being altered to accommodate or cater for those with very limited attention span just for better viewer ratings..
i reckon that its a very american way of looking at how sports should be played
americans sports like american football and basket ball where points are being scored every few minutes or even seconds rather then like with soccer that could go an entire match with a single goal being scored
by trying to appeal to a broader demographic,they could end up losing the demographic that already exists

When I initially read it, these were exactly the two changes where I thought "yeah, I could maybe live with those". The rest was rubbish.Emancipator wrote:A couple I could live with - like the shot clock and limiting the warm up to exactly 5 mins - but others are ridiculous.

Re: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
People do have attention span, it's when they're told they don't and are given a highlights sport that they tend away from the real game.
It's bonkers; the same set of people who gave us endless retrieval and slow courts & balls now get to tell us the sport needs changing to take less time.
Did none of them watch the Australian Open? Federer played three 5 set matches that lasted 3hr 23m, 3hr 4m and 3hr 37m - the last involving Nadal, a notoriously slow player. Exactly who lacks the mental faculties to watch that long? Especially since every two games you can get up and grab a drink or whatever.

Dont wanna say but it's an American thing. Anyone who watched a basket or baseball match over there knows what I am talking about...i guess the advertising world forced that upon them.

Re: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
the irony of it all...but maybe this is the change to the game they believe is needed which they are hoping will propel the next generation to the top of the game cause it doesnt look like they are ever going to do it on their own,with the way the game is played right nowbogbrush wrote:People do have attention span, it's when they're told they don't and are given a highlights sport that they tend away from the real game.

Re: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Americans have bad reputation for such things, but I do not think this is just an American thing - did not cricket also go through similar (and even much more significant) dumbing down? Also, baseball is very slow-paced and has always been, yet Americans never really made any big changes to its rules.Tenez wrote:Dont wanna say but it's an American thing.
