Depends on who he plays.summerblues wrote:Cool. Did not see the match but I suspect it will be hard to reproduce the result at RG over five sets. Still, things are looking a touch more hopeful than they were yesterday.
I don't think Thiem's problem is fitness, though he did look tired in the second set last Sunday, but that could've been due to disappointment of losing the TB in the first set.
Sudden drop of adrenaline or stg...
Anyway...good to see him beat the "King of Clay".
Did he play any different from last Sunday?
I am mainly interested in were there many points in which Nadal was pinning him in the bh corner?
And now that you have witnessed Thiem beat Nadal on clay in straight sets, do you still think Federer would struggle to win RG had he played it?
Amazing what bursting the balloon of Nadal's "invincible aura" can do in just one week...
Though I do believe he probably tanked the match.

From the looks of this, Thiem was deffo standing closer to the baseline on return which was good to see! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59KSW_nscaU

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Rome
Wow, in that clip the court plays like a mudpit.
Nadal looked like he was tanking, not that bothered.
Thiem made the most of it as he played with the same hunger as last Sunday.
To me that was the main difference, and a perfectly good move from Nadal.
Everyone's happy.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Rome
I expected Thiem to win cause he showed it was in his range last time around. Plus Nadal's game is always the same so if you are fit enough then Nadal's game is actually easy. The tougher part is being able to rally and Thiem certainly looks like he has the lungs. The more one plays against Nadal the more you get used to it. Even Federer started to get the better him in 2007 beating him 5 times out of 7 encounters. Problem is Fed got that virus in 2008 and more importantly did not have that powerful BH while Nadal started to play better and better.

I doubt Nadal has ever tanked a match in his life.
I watched this match - he definitely did not tank.

I am not saying he tanked. I however saw Nadal tank a couple of times at Queens.

Je did, quite a few times inorder to avoid Nole.
As for yesterday, I onky saw the highlights, and in them he looked slow and safer than usual.
But if he really didn't tank...even better.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Rome
I now saw Thiem-Nadal match. My thoughts:
1. Thiem was much more aggressive than in Barca/Madrid. Playing closer to the baseline and going for it more. Glad to see this approach was more successful than passive one.
2. That said, I doubt he will be able to reproduce this performance easily. While it was not an all out aggression, and he retained a measure of "control", he was still hitting a lot of risky big shots that were going in.
3. Nadal will be better at RG. I am not saying he tanked yesterday, but I think he was missing a little more than in Madrid. It is hard to be sure, as Thiem was presenting a different type of challenge with his aggressive approach, but I still felt that Rafa was not quite as sharp.
4. Maybe Fed should ask for a WC for RG.

Federer is 35 and needs rest. He has no hope of winning RG and it's a waste of time him entering it.

Djoko looking quite solid so far. Much more like the standard Djoko compared to how he looked last week against Rafa.

Yeah, when all is said and done, I tend to agree with you that it is better to give RG a miss. But he would have had some hope of winning RG.Daniel wrote:Federer is 35 and needs rest. He has no hope of winning RG and it's a waste of time him entering it.

Thiem is playing abysmally. Like a club player. Pathetic. He'll have to sort it out.

Yes, Djoko looking very solid (even though Thiem is quite poor TBH).
I wonder whether that loss to Nadal woke Djokovic up.

Zverev and Kyrgios are going to be king for a while... definitely not that one dimensional lightweight. Thiem just hasn't got the standard. It was a pathetic display.
I guess people aren't going to be writing Djok off for the French Open as easily now, eh

Just watched the highlights of Djoko Thiem. What the F**** is this loud roar from Djoko after every break of Thiem's serve???
That's ugly and let transpires such a weak mental state!
If he keeps going like that I might support Nadal against him next.

Especially it was loud on first break at 2:0, 4 minutes into the match, like it was a fifth set TB and match saved.

The yelling did raise my eyebrows a bit, as it was stg "new" and I ascribed it to venting the accumulated frustration.
All the losses, all the things that went behind the scene etc.
Yes, definitely a struggle inside.
From the meek and fearful Nole last week vs Nadal to this.
Hopefully, he'll resettle into some emotional balance soon. Though knowing his circumstances...his father, wife, guru, brother...it's going to be tough. Hard to get out of one's skin.
He played some good tennis.

SB, nitb is just rooting against Djoko out of her disappointment on his performance, not that she has given up on him, don't take too much notice of her, once Djoko wakes up, nitb will be beside him
No worries, neither Djoko nor Nadal are winning RG

Thiem played as he did against Nadal, with immensely powerful, relatively flat hitting. Nadal is (always has been) intimidated by that because his power shots need time, Djokovic soaks it up because he's a counterpuncher in the style of Connors.
Theims reaction to setback was to up the ante. Not that smart.
He never comes to the net so will never discomfort Djokovic, whose passing shots are not as good as they're made out to be.

Re: ATP Masters 1000: Rome
From the summary I saw BB, Thiem certainly stood way too far back to trouble Djoko and many other offensive players.
Just saw the break game of the second set.
Zverev is simply a much better version of Murray and Djoko. he can hold the rally but unlike the other 2 he can hurt too...plus he has a good serve.
A star is born! (not one I really like but its good to have new blood - to like or dislike)

A bit of a cheat this Zverev, trying to convince the referee that a ball touching the line is out. If HE is was right that ball was half on the line!!!

Yes, and it is important to note that like Delpo and Nadal, Zverev is helped by a huge fitness 6'6" but moves very well for his size and that is absolutely key in having an early success.
he is going to be tough to beat in the future but there are other talented players out there.

Yes, my thinking too. He can stay in a rally hitting deep shots again and again, but he is far better at inserting pace at will than Novak.Tenez wrote:he can hold the rally but unlike the other 2 he can hurt too...plus he has a good serve.

Bland & boring game. What has he got to show for 15 years of training...safe bashing and no flair.
I don't mind him per se, just nothing exciting there.

It was interesting to watch Nole trying all sorts of things but nothing worked, plus the wind was a factor.
And again, lack of confidence kept him more cautious.
Bonus: he didn't get the chance to send "love" to the crowd!
