Monte Carlo

Post by bogbrush on Sat Apr 15, 2017 9:18 am

Thought it worth a thread for a Masters.

Murrays good fortune on draws continues even though he's yet to make much use of them. He's got no excuse to fail to make the semi at least.

http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/scores/current/monte-carlo/410/draws

Djokovic in the other hand has a beast, with plenty of reasons he may not even make the semi-final appointment with Nadal. Carreno Busta isn't a pushover, and Thiem certainly isn't.

The 3rd round potential meeting between Nadal and Zverev might be interesting too.

Anyone know why Kyrgios isn't there?

Right, thanks. Odd for such a young guy to be skipping big events - you'd think he'd be wanting the big scalps & matches.

I think he cited fatigue.
He played in Davis Cup too. I still think he isn't as fit as he should be.

Also, MC is not compulsory and clay is probably his weakest surface.  Not crazy to skip it.

Nadal vs Zverev could be interesting (assuming they both get there).  I think Rafa's play has been overrated somewhat while I think Zverev has been playing better than his results suggest.

If Rafa is not close to his best, he could possibly lose to Zverev.

Fpr some reasons I can't see Nadal winning it. Standing back ain't a solution anymore.

Every year it gets more and more difficult. But given the form Djokovic and Murray are, he has a better chance this year than last.

Tenez has been saying this same thing for the last 6-7 years, if not more.  Not to be taken seriously.

But let's hope he is correct this year.  I am hoping Zverev can beat Rafa.

So Murray managed to break him twice in a row and win that first set.

Same last year at the FO when he was 2 sets down and Stepanek serving for the match.

I remember the days when Nadal would go a season without dropping a set on clay, and almost tournaments without dropping serve.

He just dropped 2 serve games in a row to Kyle Edmund.

That's a myth actually. I don;t think it ever happened nor was it close to happen. Besides FO 2008, Nadal often had very close first sets or even losses of sets all his career. What really made him different and better than the rest is that he simply last longer and almost always won the last set...like he is doing again today it seems.

Well with a quick check I find that in 2010 he played Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid and Roland Garros..... and dropped two sets in winning all four.

Close enough to happening.

Annoyingly got through though. I assume he looked vulnerable again.

Not the most emphatic of starts by Murray, Djokovic or Nadal.

Either the rest of the field is catching up or they have niggles and/or lack confidence. But in any case, to me it highlights the fact they were never so much better than the competition. they were just fitter...and when that fitness is not as sharp....they are very average. In fact once again, it;s their fitness and experience that made the difference in that first round .

Nadal is always going to be difficult to beat on Clay. No one will be that surprised if he wins Monte Carlo or the French Open this year. He is second favourite at the least for both. Arguing he is just some old fool that anyone can beat is laughably wrong.

What is happening with Dimi?

Another unexpected loss.
Is it injury, lack of confidence?

He's had a great start to the year, a wonderful match against Nadal in AO.

Could it be that he is maybe still recovering from that loss?

Saw the match. Muller like most of the field, mental chuffing midget. Had Murray dead to rights and couldn't finish him off. Murray has zero power at the moment. Clearly not 100% fit or confident. Reminded me of a couple of years ago when Murray wasn't fit and was pumping out practice rally junk balls.

Nothing is sadder when you see Murray, Djokovic, Wawrinka and Nadal so below par that it's almost impossible to think they can win the match and their opponents blow it.

I hadn't seen it but you've confirmed the only possible explanation. Maybe he's just getting back but I'd agree that he'd expect to be at least physically there before returing.

It doesn't take the field long to smell blood, there'll be others who don't blow it unless he pulls his socks up. Looking better against Ramos-Vinolas?

Murray said post match he only started serving 5 days prior to the match! Not the best prep.

If a half arsed and half fit Murray can beat Muller, doesn't speak volumes of the field at the moment.

I saw a bit of Nole, Nadal and Murray.

To me, Nole was best of the three, just lacks confidence.
His serve looked good.
All else, more or less the same. Poor volleying.
He also looked very beatable, as his aura has worn off and he is still weaponless. Spinning his fh too much.

Simon played a great match, shame he lost.

Murray was also rusty and not 100%. Muller moved like a tractor to the net, which makes Fed's recent tennis even more stratospherically good.

Nadal has lost his game and now winning only on running and experience.
He is ready for the taking.

Again, shame Fed can't play on clay.

Though, I understand he must be burnt out after those three tournaments.
His game is more finely tuned and demanding than ever.

He literally delivers masterpieces every time he plays.

And we can't have those on tap at his age.
Such a shame. Sad

Well it said a lot when Muller was drop shotting the hell out of Murray and he couldn't even make most of them. He usually chews the court up making them.

Murray seemingly struggling against Ramos! 4-0 in the final set and on the brink of fluffing it!

It's a strange situation. Murray seemingly way off last years level, Djokovic ditto; Nadal doing better but still yet to convince that he can clean up; Stan drops a set straight away; Nishikori and raonic seemingly always injured. OK, Federer is winning more or less whatever he enters but he's skipping large parts of the schedule and we're yet to see how he holds up.

It really is screaming out for Zverev, Thiem or Kyrgios to step up and take a Slam or two between them this year.

Well that really isn't so good for him - losing from 1st set 6-2 and final set 4-0 up is a bit hopeless. One of the last chances to do poorly and not drop so many points but still managed to blow 300+

Unless Djokovic rises to the occasion this #1 ranking could get very unstable, between 4 or 5 of them.

Why did Murray even bother showing up. Clearly not at 100%.

Going to be a meek end to his reign as No.1.

Zverev, Thiem and Kyrgios won't have a better chance than now to strike. No-one is in any form or health for that matter.
