Nadal isn't troubling him.  Nadal isn't really what he used to be and needed a piddle draw again. This year is going to belong to Fed, Kyrgios, Zverev, Djok, amd maybe Wawrinka.

I never thought I'd say this, but slower conds helped Fed today as he was tired, so Nadal's pace suited him to a tee.

Everyone is bumming the idea of Nadal at the FO online. The commentators are sure he will win.  I don't think so.  I think people aren't factoring in how lucky nadal has been with his draws.  He has a better chance, of course, but I don't see it.

But that is only because Nadal was nervous.

And he is nervous because he can't bludgeon Fed's bh any more.

Fed was so relaxed the entire match.

Even tired and sweaty he was cool as cucumber...no panic, no weary face of the past.

Nadal would have jumped on him the moment he sniffed an opening...but there were none.

Nadal's FH was pitiful.

Short, not getting past the service line, or into the net or long or wide. Just awful.

He's lost all confidence in his FH, and without the FH he has no weapons.

His tactics were bizarre today - serving too often to the Federer FH.

As for Federer, he looks pretty amazing at the moment. Shame Murray and Djokovic have gone AWOL - would love to have seen them up against this Roger - I suspect they would've got spanked.

I thought the match far closer than Indian Wells - not so much by the stats where Federer won 56% of the points despite having slightly fewer serves (normally enough to earn an easy win) - but because that 2nd set was going long That net cord that set up the break point was very handy, I really wouldn't have fancied a third set in that humid heat after the two three setters.

its been a bit on and off since RBA, I doubt very much he really expected to have played the whole 'Sunshine Swing'.

I guess a new record set by miles - oldest guy to win the IW / Miami double?

Re: ATP 1000: Miami

Post by summerblues on Mon Apr 03, 2017 3:13 am

That was too easy.  Fed was not playing anywhere near as well as against Kyrgios, and still he comfortably won.  Now that Rafa cannot comfortably go to Fed's BH, the dynamics is just all different.  Fed always likes to go on the offensive.  In the past, guys could pin him to the BH side and make it hard for him.  Now he is spoiled for choice.  He can attack with BH and win that way outright, or he can use his BH to elicit weaker replies from the opponent, giving himself enough time to run around the BH and smack a FH winner.

It is funny how the body language and everything flipped in the the Fed vs Rafa match up.  In the past, it was Rafa who was basically comfortable.  They both knew Fed hat to play above himself and out of his comfort zone.  He was sometimes able to do it, but the pressure was always on him, and you could see it in his body language too.  Now it is the opposite, they both know that Fed is the one very comfortable with the current match-up, and you can very much see the frustration in Rafa's body language.  Not so much yet at the AO, but very much in IW and here in Miami.

While it is fun to see Roger beating on Rafa for a change, to be honest I would rather see someone else playing Roger in the final, giving him a tougher match rather than seeing him playing Rafa who is offering hardly any resistance.

Fed's 2017 feels like it is 2006 all over again.  Perhaps the biggest difference being that if 2006 Fed played Rafa at AO, IW, and in Miami, he would now have zero titles.

My goals for the rest of the season:

Rafa:  Going with high expectations into the clay court season, he finds out that on critical points he still keeps dumping easy FHs into the middle of the net and, as a result, fails to win anything significant.  He does pretty much nothing after the clay court season.

Nole:  Focuses mostly on extracurricular activities.  The highlight of his tennis year are long hugs with Pepe.  Wins nothing worth mentioning.

Andy:  Having finally reached #1, he suddenly realizes he cannot bring himself to focus on tennis as much as he used to.  Try as he may, it is just not there.  His game falls apart and he fails to win anything of significance.

Fed:  After encouraging signs during the spring return from the long injury, he peaks for the summer season, and beats Thiem for the RG title, Dimitrov for the Wimbledon crown, and Kyrgios in the USO final.  Given he is no longer 24 and cannot play everything left right and center, he is carefully mapping out his next three seasons through 2020.

Lol. Good summary and good wishes SB.

Though as BB says it was not as comfy as you describe it. However this is most likely due to Fed tiredness.

Have to say though, i am surprised you're already getting bored of this new Fedal. For the time being the way the table turned is highly fascinating to me. And make no mistake: the day a slightly off-form Federer appears, Nadal will take advantage.
