Wow...but I am sure there is an escape clause somewhere in that contract.
I don;t think he can win any TMS 500 and 1000 now because of the consecutive playing days....but as long as he can play the top players in early rounds we shoudl have fun.

Re: Federer signs to play Basel in 2019
Here is the clip of that practice session with Pouille in Dubai.
This one has an extra with Federer driving to the court and talking about his 6 months off.
You can see from those 5-6 minutes of him going to his "office" why he has signed up to play Basel till 2019.
If he is happy to thrill us, I am happy to be thrilled!

And if nothing else, just look at that picture on the clip:
the way he is holding the racquet, touching the frame and strings gently, the way he is looking at it...talking to it with his eyes like to an old friend.
It's a story in itself: the questions, the pain, the satisfaction, the thrill, the unbreakable bond he has with it...like a maestro with his Stradivarius.
It's a living relationship.
And then there is the BALL.
And the joy it gives.
Federer is a happy man because he is in a world of his own.
He needs no motivation to keep going.
Only his body will stop him.
I can see him play with replaced hips, knees till he is 50+...
It's interesting how different he and Djokovc are in that way.
Djokovic is trusting the food, stretching to make him last, Federer - serene in the silence with his racquet...the story continues...

Re: Federer signs to play Basel in 2019
I don't see him play much from now on. This break was probably an eye opener for him. He can afford to rest long months and turn up and his tennis is still there while him being fresh. I think he will play 5 TMS 1000 max and just the slams...plus Basel of course....maybe dubai.

Yes!
And that is the perfect scenario for him.
I wonder if he'll play any clay masters this year...maybe Rome?

Re: Federer signs to play Basel in 2019
I suspect one clay event to get it under his feet and a few rounds at RG to see how far he can get on short rallies alone. Got to watch out for that upper leg injury that he's not yet shaken off.
Wimbledon will surely now be the focus of his year.

Re: Federer signs to play Basel in 2019
I reckon his schedule will be something like:
Dubai
IW
Miami (but probably skip it if he reaches IW final)
One clay masters (Rome or MC)
RG
Stuttgart (contracted to play this year and will honour that unless he reaches RG final - highly unlikely)
Halle
W
Cincinnati
USO
Laver Cup - ridiculous waste of time
Shanghai
Basle
Paris (but may skip it if he wins Basle)
WTF
Total - 15 proper tournaments and one joke waste of time. But may trim it down further by skipping Paris and and Miami.
This is the minimum if he wants to be competitive and maintain at least a top 8 seeding at the slams. He can't just turn up after months off tour and expect to repeat what he did in OZ. He knows that - that was luck as much as anything else and he had to battle so hard to achieve it. Don't think he's got many of those battles left in the tank. If his quarter opponent had been Murray instead of Zverev I think he would have lost easily to Stan in the semi. So a lowly ranking puts him at risk of meeting Djokovic, Nadal or Murray in the last 16 or quarters in which case he'll either (very possible) or be drained by a long match and thus lose in the next rd.

Re: Federer signs to play Basel in 2019
indian wells definitely over miami
i reckon that he will play madrid rather then rome or MC cause thats where he has had the most success on clay going into RG
after the u.s open i think we could see him play only the WTF
i agree with tenez,i think the break was an eye opener for him..at his age less is definitely more

Re: Federer signs to play Basel in 2019
If he wants to do well in a clay masters he'll play Madrid; if he wants proper prep for RG, he'll play MC or most likely Rome.
Madrid plays differently to the other clay tourneys.
If he doesn't play enough tourneys he'll slide down the rankings, meet tougher opponents earlier and lose.

i dont know if that will bother him after what he just did at AOTMF wrote:If he wants to do well in a clay masters he'll play Madrid; if he wants proper prep for RG, he'll play MC or most likely Rome.

madrid is clearly the odd one out clay tournament, but the confidence he gets from doing well at madrid has certainly given him momentum at RG in the past

I think Federer may skip all clay tournaments and just turn up at RG.

i even think that depending on how his body is holding up,that he may skip playing RG and the clay season and focus entirely on the grass seasonNITB wrote:I think Federer may skip all clay tournaments and just turn up at RG.
he has still got a realistic shot at winning another wimbledon after seeing him win AO

But it makes his job at the slams much harder. He can beat the second tier players back to back but I can't see him beating 2 of Murray, Nadal and Djokovic. If he's not in the top four he could potentially face all three of them in a slam.

Re: Federer signs to play Basel in 2019
What he says and what happens are two different things. I doubt he will be playing after this year. If he gets any kind of bad back injury from this point on, he will call it quits instantly. The guy is not going to go through painful and prolonged rehab at 35 with 18 slams in the bank.

Re: Federer signs to play Basel in 2019
When it comes to making commitments the opposite is more true. It seems laughable now, but the talk in 2012 was that his comments about Rio 2016 were bluster, but here he is wining a Slam in 2017.
Obviously catastrophic injury could stop anyone but I think he knows that careful management of fitness is more important than ever but the will is there to play on, and where there's a will.......

Re: Federer signs to play Basel in 2019
Federer loves to play on the big stage and he will do everything in his power to stay out there as long as possible and as long as he is competitive. Only a catastrophic injury will curtail that - small niggles, he'll try to work through.
He just said in an interview with kids that he hasn't put a figure on how old he will be when he retires but would like to play till he is 40.

Yeah...I think tonight and tomorrow will be really tough for federer. If he goes through to the final then I think he will win as teh extra day of rest before the final will help him. But getting there is his biggest challenge.
