Is Nishikori a Bottle Job? Empty Is Nishikori a Bottle Job?

Post by Daniel on Mon Feb 20, 2017 11:31 am

I am going to say yes.  I was never impressed with him. I give him credit that he plays some superb shots and holds his own a lot of the time, while also being under 6 feet tall—but that's about it.  Like many of the younger lot, he seems to me to be a mental midget. I've never seen a tour so full of bottlers tbh - and Nishikori is their ambassador.

He's just lost another final—his 6th in a row Yikes —to Dolgopolov in the Argentina Open. In 2016, he was one win from 7 finals. And the one he won was against Taylor Fritz.   Laugh Doh  He's started this year trying to outdo himself—so far, 0 from 2.

What makes you say Davydenko is more talented than Nishi?
I think quite the opposite.

Stands closer to the baseline, takes the ball earlier, hits it flatter, redirects the ball using the pace from his opponent and out manoeuvres his opponents to create openings - that's his Modus Operandi and it takes a huge amount of talent to be top 5 in the world when you're basically relying on your hand eye coordination.

Nishikori is too defensive for my liking - too much of a roadrunner, whereas Davy used to make his opponent do the running.

Actually they're quite different players so maybe the Davy comparison isn't the most apt one, but I certainly think Davy is the more talented of the two.

I am not  convinced.
Davydenko was a hard worker.

Just a very good ball basher who couldn't volley to save his life.

Nishi is the proper talent who strikes the ball so sweetly, had he played in Davydenko's era, he would have been more successful.

What's Nishi's record against Nadal? I know Davy has beaten Nadal 6 times and he didn't win those matches by ball bashing or grinding. He took time away from Nadal and dictated play.

Djokovic can't volley to save his life - he's still the best player of this decade.

I was an admirer of Davydenko, at least as far as I'm going to be of a double handed baseliner. He was quite gifted in his timing and could - as he showed toward the end of whatever season it was - be unplayable.

Nishikori depresses me, I can't have any confidence in him. Every time he looks to do something he falls down. Thank God he didn't beat Federer because he'd only have folded to Zverev (possibly) or Stan (almost certainly).

Yes Nishi is extremely disappointing more so that he is hugely talented. What's also strange is that he had a great number of BPs conversion or saving BPs one of the 2. But clearly losing 6 straight finals....is nearly as bad as Nadal's mental wise! Winking

Davydenko makes Nishikori look like a schoolboy.  Which he is.

Wrong.  He would have retired and given them a bye.  He was already on his last legs. And he did his v best to ruin things.  By the end of the 5th set I wanted to smack him.
