Konta loses the first set. What opportunity she has to potentially reach the semis.

Re: US open prediction game - day 7
I managed to get a copy of today's L'Equipe on the beach!
It felt so nice to hold a sports newspaper in my hands again..after so many years.
I used to spend my meagre lunch money on the Serbian equivalent "Sport" when I was a teenager...no internet, just an article and one or two photos, those were the days...
So...just like then I had all the time in the world to read the FOUR pages dedicated to tennis!
I think I got about 70-80% without any dictionary so pleased with myself!
There were three articles, one on Tsonga, Monfils, and two pages on Pouille, i.e. the interview with his coach.
I was a bit surprised and certainly annoyed with the worship treatment Nadal was given.
There was an article that had 20:1 in huge bold letters...that was the score Nadal apparently has against French players in slams...
If that was not enough, Emanuel Planque (Pouille's coach) sang praises to Nadal.
He was deeply impressed with his attitude to sport (called it the ultimate model of a sportsman), his fighting spirit, never say die mindset...to end calling him a boxer of tennis comparing him to Mike Tyson.
But I know what he means...
He also talked about Federer, saying how Nadal does not possess the fluidity of Federer's technique, that Federer [i]is/i] the model of technique.
Perhaps, he is again sheltering his protege.
Who said something encouraging: that despite Nadal's status and how he looked up to him, that phase is now behind him, i.e. he is ready to take him on.
ALLEZZZZZ!!!!

Pouille made light work of Nadal in that first set.
Let's see how this second set pans out and whether Nadal improves.

Re: US open prediction game - day 7
wow, just wow. Lucas Pouille made me login here. This first set against NAdal (6-1) was truly a masterclass.
I don't think he'll be able stick to this level this match (it's a very fit NAdal he's facing after all) but what a promising player he is. To me the most complete of all young players of the tour.

Nadal didn't do much wrong. He can only hope on Pouille to tire, which probably will happen

Pouille 4 BPs in that game and Nadal went into fight mode! Nadal 4-1 in the 2nd. Some ridiculous retiriving in that game.

It's the crowd support and his faster legs that give Nadal the egde in this set but overall he's outplayed in every aspect of the game

Such a shame Pouille played 2 5 setters in a row. I woudl have fancied his chances otherwise. he is the new Nalbandian or the new Mecir....with a good net game.

Yeah, NAlbandian indeed. Although he's probably a little bit further behind the baseline. But his serve/FH is better than David'sTenez wrote:LOL.gallery play wrote:That one was for everyone who thinks the famous tweener lob was done deliberately. NAdal is clearly a louzy tweenerist

He has the same winning, fighting mentality as Federer - keeps gong and attacking relentlessly.
Nothing clouds his focus, imoressive.
And such low net clearance...
I keep believing he will win this in the end.

His legs were heavy but his heart kept going, so solid inside, nothing fragile at all.
What an amazing performance.
So cool yet fiery.

Re: US open prediction game - day 7
And Lucas really won this match, Nadal played very well.
He had such belief.
I also read today that he trained with Nadal for two and a half hours.
That's another thing his coach was imoressed about Nadal - said he had to go to Laber Cup promotion or stg, but still turnd uo for the training with Lucas and stayed nit two but two and a half hours, hitting with high intensity.
That may have given Lucas the feel for his ball and confidence to play like he did.
I was so impressed deoth of his second serve...it was rock solid!

Wilander spot on again.
"Nadal played negatively. That was good enough in the past but nowadays you cannot do that against those young new players".

I disagree Nadal played negatively, he has always played like that.
He even played all court tennis didn't chip his BH as usual.
He was as good as he could be.

Re: US open prediction game - day 7
That was very nice
I was getting nervous when Lucas went a break down early in the fifth and started to look tired, but it just made the final result so much sweeter.
I would not begrudge him this USO though I wonder how much he will have in the tank.
He has now played 19 sets in four rounds (this was his third straight 5-setter).
Very well done!

Re: US open prediction game - day 7
I thought Rafa played ok, but not much better than that. He played better than what he has been playing most of the last two years, but he still puts in way more very cheap UEs than he used to in the past.
The errors like he made at 1:1 and 6:6 in TB used to almost never happen. Now you know that there is always one behind a corner.

I don't care how tired Lucas is, he's got to beat Monfils now.
If nothing else than for the sake of that loss in AO15.

I agree. Though he almost did! Messed up 3 MPs.
I was quite impressed by his temperament. I think he woudl have won more convincingly had he not been so tired.

Re: US open prediction game - day 7
I certainly prefer Lucas to Monfils, but Monfils has been cruising so far (though I have not seen him yet so do not know how well he has been playing). Also, Monfils seems to have (finally) matured a little, so I am not sure he is still the same head case he used to be. He will be a tough customer.noleisthebest wrote:I don't care how tired Lucas is, he's got to beat Monfils now.
