i dont think nationalism is the problem, its just a bunch of powerful people who abuse the power of sport to achieve political agenda
the power of sport can be used in a positive way
just look at how nelson mandela used rugby to unite a nation and help build its morale
clint eastwoods movie invictus tells the story but you cant fully understand the sheer magnitude of what mandela managed to achieve
rugby played by whites only was one of the biggest symbols of apartheid and was absolutely hated by the africans
they always supported the opposing team
how he managed to get them to embrace the sport and support then national team when the country was hosting the rugby world cup was nothing short of phenomenal

i hear the commentators were saying that that it looked like the djokovic of 09/2010 sweating profusely and struggling to breathe..ready to retire ...
if djokovic goes on the win the u.s open then i would find this first round loss very suspicious

reminds me of murray losing in the first round at the 08 olympics only to to make his first grand slam final at the u.s open a few weeks later

I put 100 quid on Del Potro at evens. Shame I didn't do it when he was 8-1 like I was going to.

Del Potro is back - and his best is better than Djokovic's. It's that simple. Djokovic has no answer to those forehands because they are like Federer 2006 - too fast and hitting the lines. As soon as you take all the time away from Djokovic, he hasn't got a clue what to do. Like 99% of players past or present.

The appeal of the Olympics is the fact countries are competing. We are tribal creatures and removing that from the Olympics destroys the whole point of it.

It wouldn't for me. Do I care what nation Bolt represents? Not at all, I just want to see people run fast, jump far, throw further.

The comment that it destroys the whole point shows how far it's gone. The whole point is the youth of the World united in competition. Flags don't help that.

I like the national aspect too. It's an additional flavour to the games and a healthy one....as long as people can put it in perspective.

He didn't have any rest which isn't normal for major tennis competition.

Searched a lot, but still can't seem to find Djokovic's match on the schedule anywhere.

what does that have to do with being back?
if youre back youre back, not back only if you have a little bit of rest inbetween
the olympics isnt a major tournament either, most people wouldnt consider it any greater then winning a masters 1000 event  let alone a grand slam especially when you look at the amount of players that decided not to pitch up
besides at a normal masters 1000 event players would be playing pretty much every day so whats up with the excuse?

so pothead phelps wins his 21 gold medal but does that automatically make him the greatest olympian ever?
numerically arguably but lets be honest most other sports dont have as many events for an athlete to compete in so the chances for winning that many medals is greatly reduced or not even possible
the olympics may be the pinnacle for some sports but for other sports there are far more prestigious titles
some people believe that the value of gold in tennis was only increased by agassi trying ti elevate himself over sampras

I'm watching the Olympics on the main French TV Channel and guess who is being interviewed live? Llodra interviewing Djokovic!

Djoko has a pretty good French. He was saying he was sad to have lost but recognised that Delph played very well.

I have not seen and don't intend to see any Olympics.

Decided instead to have my own ones by playing at least twice as much sport as I normally do every day while The Games last.

Cycling, swimming, tennis, gym.

Fantastic!

In between my cycling and tennis I could not help having a peek at Murray-Fognini as it was on BBC.

Two points were enough.

The court is shockingly slow.
No wonder Nole lost to Delpo.

looking more and more like a murray /nadal final....it would be pretty fitting for two of the ugliest most horrific players the game has ever seen to sum the entire rio olympic tennis games experience up

Mental midget. Says it all considering his opponent has no mental strength at all when things go wrong.

I wanted to see that match but there was no stream on bet365.

It looked very close score-wise and I was wondering which of the two would win as neither are known for grit and heart.

It's semis today, I am assuming Murray-Nishi will be on BBC, anyone has a link for Nadal-Delpo?

The match on the BBC, red button or online. All the matches are on the BBC....I believe.

Anyway, it's ridiculously slow.

I was thinking Russia is systematically doping but US and UK have by far the most success per inhabitant. They must have good genes.

Thanks. I couldn't find Monfils-Nishi on BBC online last night, though I didn't look at red button.

Still not following anything, just seeing headlines in the passing...which is more than enough:

"green" swimming pools, reporters being "attacked", Delpo stuck in the lift....Phelps winning million gold medals....and just as I was wondering how Chinese are suddenly allowed to be  "clean" - one of their swimmers tested positive.
It's not even gratifying to know what goes on any more...

Of all Olympics so far, I only saw the first two points of Murray-Fognini the other day. Really slow court which put me off watching any of his or Nadal matches...but still would like to see Delpo and Nishi...though I don't know how they can win today.

Delpo will be tired and if anyone can make him move it will be Nadal and Murray. Nishi...it's too slow for him and he is not as fit as Murray, let alone gritty.

Del Potro played great.  He's now beaten 2 defenders.  One more to go.

Nadal was fist pumping all over, the crowd were against Del Potro and obnoxious as their hero - and Nadal has a MASSIVE amount of good fortune - but still lost.

Great to see him go out after running around pumping away - and to see someone as lovely as Del Po - with his great attacking game - triumph, even on this slow-ass court.

But yes the conds are abusrdly slow. I think it is very clear the balls are bigger than normal.

Beautiful performance from Nadal; after playing 6 sets on Friday and winning the Gold in doubles (having to do tonnes of running as Marc Lopez would run forward in any extended rally leaving Nadal to literally defend the whole court including tramlines like crazy); heroic display.
Del Potro will be exhausted- he has no chance against Murray, but to be fair Nadal and Del Potro would have both been too tired for the BO5 final tomorrow.

Yes, Nadal was hilarious in his celebrations.

Looked quite human and watchable in that edition.

Nadal is a better player, but Murray has overtaken him in energy levels now. I can't believe I am saying this, but I prefer to watch Nadal than Murray.

I hope God is with Delpo today.

^ I prefer to watch neither Winking Murray must really love Delpo, if not for him the 2012 Olympic final would have been very different and now he takes out Noledal & probably running on empty for the final... I wish 2017 would start quickly Run
