Remember the Federer v Pete GOAT debates many years ago
I spent my time arguying with many on how much better Federer was compared to Pete.
I guess not many would argue against nowadays.
Of Course Lydian was one of Pete fiercest fan and always argued that when Fed (19 to be 20) beat Pete (29 to be 30) in their unique encounter, Pete was past his best. The reason I am starting this thread is that I saw yesterday Federer 34 with a back injury dismentling the 19 yo prodigee that is Zverev.
We know now that a 19y is much further away from his peak than a 29yo (who actually might be right in his peak years).
That's one of the many arguments I had with Lydian and of course was plain wrong.
Other subject of disagreements were grass (not balls) being slower, hitting with spin harder than hitting flat and of course the physical aspect of the game, completely underrated by so many.

Funny you mention Sampras, I actually thought of him yesterday and how antiquated he would look today.
Talking of physicality, a thought crossed my mind about Fed's back problems.
I noticed his calves are bigger than ever (particularly the right leg.
I am assuming he had the knee op on his eight leg, so strengthened the muscles to support it) even his gait jas changed slightly.
Could it be that he overloaded the back in the gym that caused the re-injury?
So hard to be at the top now.
And when I watched him vs Thiem today, I realised again what an outstanding athlete he is.

Btw, I do remember some of those debates.
They were as interesting as a 40 shot CC rally.
Lydian must be one of your closet fans now.
I admit I am not as patient as you.

I think he was already then but his ego prevented him to admit I was right!
