Madrid '16
Since Madrid is my least favourite tournament, minimal effort here.
Everyone is playing and that's all that needs to be said.
ABN!!!

Federer has to beat Nadal, Murray and Djoko if he wants to win it!
Federer's draw is ridiculous. I bet he will be tanking in the secodn or 3rd round.

Yes, I saw the draw briefly...but who cares about these Masters 1000...it's slams that count!

I read that Nadal's 2nd coach said he is desperate to break 17 slam record, and that he'd even go for "a surgery" (?) in order to be able to play till 31-32.
I think these last 10 years ot tennis are an era of their own.
I mean different and separate from the pre-open and open era.
It's quite phenomenal how much tennis has changed.

I doubt Nadal will win 3 more slams. he is certianly playing very well again but it's too late.
Djoko is also a long way off too. The best he can do is win 4 in a row....but he is a nervous player on the big occasion.

I don't know if Nole can catch Fed, looks very difficult.
For me, the Nadal-Nole slam race is more interesting as they are competing for the DBH GOAT-ship.

Disappointed to see Fed withdraw from Madrid, was really looking forward to seeing him play again
I guess he needs to look after his body, hope this back injury isn't going give him more problems over the summer slams and olympics

That's a shame.
I wonder (seriously) if his back gets spasmatic on nervous basis.
Psychosomatic reaction to draw.
He'll probably play in Rome.

What a win for Pouille!
So happy for him.
Impressive courage and nerves under pressure.
Such a likeable player. There is hope for France!

Re: Madrid '16
Just tuned in and what is the very first thing I see? - A classic Nadal point from hell!
3:3 in the 2nd set, 15:30, Kuznetsov hits a great, fast inside out FH into corner, Nadal scraps it back, Kuznetsov then plays a decent smash into the opposite corner and I have no idea how Nadal manages to get his racquet on the ball at the top of its bounce....
Kuznetsov now has all the time in the world to do whatever he likes: to put away an easy smash, volley...whatever he wants, anywhere he wants...and what does he do?
He sends the smash 3m out.
I am crying on his behalf.
ps
Yes, he got broken in the next point
pps
Spanish crowd is ultra primitive, yelling in the middle of service motion almost every time.

Order of play:
With three really hot matches:
Fognini-Nishikori
Wawrinka-Kyrgios
Djokovic-Coric
&
the bonus: Pouille-Querrey
From what I saw yesterday, clay is playing fast, so the Nole-Nadal final is not a guarantee, though it would make a perfect ending with 8th of May being Victory Day.

Re: Madrid '16
I am in tennis heaven!
Screen one: Fognini-Nishikori
Beautiful ball-striking: Nishi's superb timing, great movement, he is loving this court!
But sorry Nishi, although winning in this first set, you are a roboto-chan.
The magic is all with Fabulous Fabio!
Tanned, with a little food-loving tummy, dressed in fiery colours like a Cacadou it is he who even in losing brings all the sunshine, O Sole Mio!
He tries the impossible. He tempts faithfully. O Fabio, Fabio! FORZAAAAA!
Screen 2: Wawrinka-Kyrgios.
Under the same blue sky, just a court away from Fognini & Nishikori, it's thunders and lightnings!
Kyrgios, The evil clown dressed in dark, leaping around the court, unbridled in his primitive, raw sentiments....
Stan, the Macho Man trying to tame the hailstones. His BH is as mighty as anyone's FH in defence. Just wow.
Fantastic TB in which there is a dodgy call which brings Stan from a mini break down to - up!
He roars.
Kyrgios roars back.
The complacency and brainlesness/recklesness of Kyrgios works and he takes the first set.
ALLEZZZ ZTAAAAN!!!!
Madrid and caja magica are a terrible venue for tennis.
I can feel its ugly vibe all the way in sunny Berkshire. Like a couldron from hell waiting to erupt on Sunday.
In silence, of course.

Re: Madrid '16
And Stan is out.
Lost the match in three points, including an unlucky net cord in the second TB.
Kyrgios never felt any pressure from Stan's returning on his service game and was able to be as loose as he liked.
Ain't gonna happen versus a good returner.
Over in the Land of Sole Mio, Fantastic Fabio levels the match to one set all.
And Pouille The Braveheart battling against Querrey.
Man, that guy is so plain and boring...
TB!
Allez Lucas!!!! Go go goooooooo!

I am not into all that stat/ranking/ number crunching (though I admit they do make sense from time to time) but I can see his game is filling out.
Last year in Boodles he was practising mid court inside out FHs almost exclusively.
And in Wimbledond doubles with Mannarino, he could not hit a volley or a BH down the middle to save his life.
But now, his serve has improved, his defence is very good and he can play it well when pushed behind the baseline.
He looks a little tired atm, so I hope he wons this in two sets and has enough rest for Nadal tomorrow.

Not watching but only half surprised. Djoko could not do much either versus the top players.
However I think Couric may have little future faced to the new generation. BTW what happened to Kokki?

Not sure about Coric's future.
He is the only weaponless player of the new generation and all he can hope for is for his timing to improve.
On top of that he is an unimaginative player. Pure counterpuncher with zero character.
His game reminds me of Nishikori's, minus the talent.
I don't know what Kokki is doing.
Probably injured, banging his head against the wall.

The draw and matches look a bit tired today.
Only Simon-Murray holds some promise, but I've noticed that Simon is beginning to struggle with his game.
Surprised to see Monfils lose to Cuevas who is good, but nothing special.
Mind you, Monfils has shown his limitations, too.

Gasquet Kei should be good. Funnily enough Nishi has lost all 6 of their matches, most comprehensively. Just one set won in 6 matches.

Richie can play well on clay (and on grass), but only when he is not 3m behind the baseline, and that unfortunately does not happen often.
Yes, interesting stat.
Didn't know he "owns" Nishi!

That was total demolition of Agut from Djokovic.
Agut caved in pretty quickly as he simply can't compete with Djokovic from the baseline.
We basically have a two tier competition now.
But since there is plenty of cash in the pool, everyone seems to be happy....pocket the cheque and pack the bag for Rome.
Sun always shines in tennis-land.

One set all, hopefully Cuevas can win the third.
He is playing in fine form, excellent control on all shots.
Great balance of attacking without going for broke.
No panic at all.
Although he plays from the baseline, he never engases in mindless "rallies".

It's actually Kyrgios that plays instictive tennis here making Nishi look like a counterpuncher.
However nice his ball-striking and shots, Nishi's tennis is robotic. Not that cerebral either.
He enjoys hitting the ball more than playing it.
But don't bite my head odd! that's just me at my pickest best.

Well, it was Nishi's FH that won him this TB!
And a very high level of play from both.
If they continue to hit every ball as hard as they can like this in the third set, I have no idea how they are going to recover for tomorrow.

Raonic is bad.
His tennis looks totally disjointed. Probably still not 100%.
He was really good a couple of years ago in RG, but Nole's timing has improved a lot in the last few years. Not easy to keep up with his relentlessness.
At the peak of his dominance, Federer was sending the ball back fast, Nole is sending it back full stop.
