Just started watching Halys (the new French hope, Nole's round 2 opponent at AO) match and although he is quite tall he seems to make a tiny leap in the air when serving.
I remember the days when I used to play volleyball, jump kick serving was starting to be the craze and way "forward".

It wouldn't surprise me if the same trend happened in tennis, although timing the small tennis ball with a racquet is much more difficult than serving a much bigger volleyball with the palm of your hand.

On another note, Delpo won his first comeback match, the score even looks convincing!

Of all young players, Rublev is the only one who goes down the line.

Everyone else (with the occasional exception of Thiem) plays exclusively CC tennis.

I don't remember that being the case in the past.

Is it because they are generally hitting the ball much harder now?

I find it strange.

They are all pros and could make their life easier, especially while they are young and being so far behind in fitness & stamina compared to older players.

Halys in particular, breathing through his gills after a relatively "short" long rally...and losing TB as a result.
Not to mention predictability factor.

Good observation regarding Rublev.....but he is also the only one going down the ranking now.

he lost 2 Qualif is succession in the US! Not good!

Rublev, Young (Donald), Kyrgios, Murray...all had/have mother coaches and seem to be emotionally problematic volatile.
Maybe it's time for Rubi to cut the umbillical cord.

Mothers are meant to give hugs and kisses. To support unconditionally.

It's a fine line otherwise and relationships may get strained and complicated.
Especially when circumstances/results hit the brick wall.

Murray is still recovering!

Match of the Day:

Nadal-Almagro (I suppose the organisers could not ask poor Monaco to be Nadal's cannon fodder second week in a row, still, Almagro played a great match against Thiem in BA final on Sunday)

Gasquet-Gulbis (dunno what to say here, is Gasquet injured? If not he should win with ease. Gulbis is still hitting flat and with his hit&miss style so...anyone with a bit of decent ball control will manage him. And yes, the day has arrived when Gasquet has become one of those players...

Zverev-Berdych (curious to see if young Zverev will be able to make Berd nervous with his dogged competitiveness.)

Also playing Paire, Delpo....

And I am wondering what this Noah Rubin is like...a young Yank from McEnroe's NY academy, I am pretty sure he won one of Wimbledon junior titles...

Almagro can beat Nadal if he can repeat the level he showed in BA. Looking forward to Thiem taking on (probably) Ferrer.

Don't believe that Zverev can beat Berdych, but he was surprisingly steady last week. His game shows most promise at the moment among the guys his age.

Rublev hasn't really managed to establish himself on the main tour with recent losses to Smith, Albot, Evans in qualifying. He is now 1-4 for the year, not exactly promising.

I saw a little of Gasquet-Gulbis yesterday.
Poor Earnie...he's worked so hard (esp for his comfortable background standards), and playing well, yet it's not enough...maybe he'll be better on clay.

With him atm it's all about the serve, and he is an emotional volcano, so not the most reliable weapon for him ALL the time, which is a shame as it is really good.

He made Richie look like a retriever...

I don't know about you all, but I am enjoying tennis on hard courts less and less these days.

It may sound funny, but I am actually feeling the pain of players as they strain their minds and bodies trying to put the ball away. Nobody seems to enjoy themselves (except Dustin Brown, of course! Bubbly )

Can't wait for clay and grass season in Europe!

Rubi will take a while to break through for several reasons, but he is by far the most talented and exciting of all young players.

Though I haven't seen it, great win for Thiem last night.
Beating Ferrer on clay SINGLEHANDEDLY is no small feat.

I hope two weeks of back to back play haven't exhausted him.
At least one benefit of being a "young" player - quick recovery!!!

Nadal playing Cuevas...so hopefully no rain delays tonight for European fans to be able too see it in reasonable hours.

Delpo seems to be rolling in Delray, beating Chardy convincingly in straight sets - he shook the rust off quickly!

And in Marseille, Paire in SF!!! diva
He was very good against Stan last night.

The only Frenchman playing full-blooded tennis. Great serving and spicy ball-striking.

Berd also looked less robotic, will be a good match against Kyrgios.

He is revolting.

Nice surprise to see Cuevas beat Nadal in three sets. I dropped off watching it...

And shame Thiem was unsettleted by bad weather against Pella.
It would have been a cool final between him and Cuevas!

All in all encouraging show of SBH-ers on clay in the last few weeks!

I saw a bit...hoping Cilic would beat Kyrgios.
Unfortunately, Cilic played safe whereas Kyrgios was loose all the time without going for the lines, and that was enough.
I wish Paire was in the final as he would have given us a better match.

Kyrgios and Ferrer are the only players that look worse in real life than on TV.

I can't explain why, but their shots look better on TV.

Kyrgios has good hands, good serve, isn't a choker...that's about it.

He is also a good athlete.

But bad news for tennis. I really don't like him.

Frankly, he is too young for me to really dislike him. he might mature quickly....though I feel he will always have a big head...but that means he won't win as much as if he was humble.

I dunno...he's dragging tennis down to real, cheap and nasty levels.

All the work Federer put into game will be undone by that attitude freak if he starts winning slams.

His problem is not his youth but his thickness, and they haven't discovered a cure for that yet.

He makes Tomic look angelic!

Hopefully someone will put him in his place.

Worst case scenario, he ends up tennis villain as you said...and yes, that brings tons of pleasure! Run

True, but Zverev plays like a 25 year old.
Great competitive temper.

Doesn't seem to struggle physically either.

Should be a good match.

I even pick him as a favourite as he has a better serve.

Rubi is an interesting case because he didn't buikd muscles with steroids early like Zverev, Coric etc.
I remember seeing Zverev practise with Nole in Boodles about 3-4 years ago - he was as skinny as Rubi.

So obviously Rubi relying on talent.

Now, talent not going as far as it would have 10-15 years ago, he's got himself in a frustrating position where he has to wait to fill out naturally.
I hope he perseveres. It's tougher than ever now to break through. And expensive.
The way he plays it will take 2-3 years before he catches up with Zverev, but once he does he'llbe great, esp when he starts winning and gaining confidence.

I don't mind Zverev, he is not exciting but is at least interesting to watch.

He plays Murray's game with clean shots.

Zverev, like Nole, has a good natural feel in his wrist for the shot length.
And seemingly effortless pace.

Does not rush anything. Plays within himself and when he decides to pull the trigger, those are usually very attractive shots.

I can't wait for Rubi to join him at the top. It is going to be a very nice rivalry.

Match is living up to expectations!

Zverev went down 0:2 in the 3rd set but managed to break back.

Impressive resolve.

He has actually grown from an exclusive basher into an attacking player under pressure.

Unfortunately, doesn't hold his serve. Thiem's defence's too good for him.

Plus, Thiem has a bit more guile.

Experience also showed a few times.

Good match.

I find it more interesting to watch young players now.
The older ones are not showing anything new, just hitting the ball harder.

For those who care, two nice "little" tournaments going on in Metz and St Petersburg,
even featuring some top 10 names: Stan, Raonic etc...

Tournament in Metz in particular, full of talent incl Pouille, Thiem, Goffin, Brown...

Rubi, the Little Dragon, back from the dead after winning doubles rubber for Russia in DC last weekend, - playing Kuku today.

He needs to grow in confidence.

Chung is still winning but he plays a very low field in no-mans land. That's not how he is going to progress.

I saw the last few games of Rublev's match.

He was playing quite well, still skinny, but the face has lost the child.

He is not a little dragon any more...now he is an angry one.
Angry and frustrated.

He was hitting his legs hard after missing a shot, even with his racquet.

He must have inflicted so much pain he nearly took an MTO.

I wished he could have someone like Pouille's coach to calm him down.

His shots were fantastic.

It would be great to see him play Pouille, in fact.

I just hope he doesn't implode.

He will be facing Chung tomorrow though he is a year younger. In fact he is ranked higher than Rublev being about 6 months younger....though Rublev was ranked higher 6 month ago.

I think Asian men will always struggle from the physical side as their build is not athletic enough for tennis.

They never did well in tennis even in the days when hand to eye coordination played a major part.

Nishi himself said it's he fact he grew up in the US and on their Mc Donalds diet that allowed him to grow a bit bigger than the average Japanese, which is true if you compare him to other Japanese players atm.

Chung probably doesn't even care much for tennis as he apparently took it up to correct his eyesight. (!!!)

Today, you have to be talented, strong, work as a dog and be lucky in order to succeed.

Anything less and you are out.

But they have other skills compensating for size. They are clearly quite a few of them entering the top 100 and that is something very new. Chang did well for his size but what they need for now is what Europeans have: a Very high standard in most clubs....and that's coming fast and strong in Asia.

Being short did not help in that serve and volley era but if it remains slow and spiny they will have a good chance. The fact a guy like Nishi got to that level suggests there is much more to come.

They have very quick reactions and low center of gravity which means they can exploit anybody's mouvement weakness....like Nishi does very well.

I am convinced they will be a force to be reconked with very soon.

WOW......on the other hand being tall can help too. Fantastic result from Zverev beating Berdych. The youngsters are on their way!

I am not convinced...table-tennis suits them better I think.

Yes, youngsters are definitely interesting to watch now, all of them. Even Coric! (as a baby Nadal)

The question is when they will be ready to start competing/winning in 2nd week of slams.
2018-19?

Yes, That's the real challenge...unless their weapons can shorten rallies.

But I also think that as the top 100 get better, it is also harder for the road runners to arrive fresh(er) at the end of a slam. So I think we can expect to see them arriving more tired in semis and Finals...making it harder to contain shotmakers. Stan clearly showed that recently. Even though he was knackered himself, he was able to tear apart Nishi and Djoko by sending them to corners. Once again, I am convinced that Djoko would most likely have beaten Stan at the beginning of a slam....but at the end it is harder.

In Fact because of the age difference, Federer can't do what Stan does. But Fed did it in the past. Wasn't he the only player to have beaten Nadal in a 5th set? Both at Miami and Wimbledon. And I reckon he may have done it again in 2008 if it was not for rain stop and dark lights.

He did it also v Djoko and Murray (though in 4 sets) in Wimby 2012....but after that.....the end of slams were too hard for him at 30 plus whereas the youngster had the advantage in that respect.

My subscription for tennis tv ran out and I don't want to renew it now at the end of the season, still have eurosport from when I watched USO though, but they are only covering St Petersburg.

And all the once reliable from sport etc streams are virtually useless now.
One (lemon) even asked me to leave card details to register...ATP 250/500 2016 - Basel, Vienna 2355573927

What are you watchng Pouille-Goffin on?

I am watching it on Betfair....but it's so tiny it;s ridiculous.

Batman thread was ok for the Thiem match but it's stuck for the Puille match. Annoying!!

I am nearing my £400 mark with my initial £100 placement in Betfair.

I like the "cash in now" option. You just have to hope for a swing in a set to make money....and Sets almost always have swings .

Yet Fed could and still would beat Stan.

Fed's main weapon - the speed of play got blunted with slowing conditions.
He is simply unable to play his game. Whereas all that suited Stan who could have time to strike the ball hard.

I wonder if playing certain people became a pain for him.

His body may have liked the rest, but I really can't imagine him restarting the engine again.
