Australian Open 2016 - Day 8 (and predictions) Empty Re: Australian Open 2016 - Day 8 (and predictions)

Post by noleisthebest Sun Jan 24, 2016 8:59 pm

I can't quite put my finger on it, but this AO has not taken off...yet!

Nadal's early elimination definitely took away something (though it was never the case in Wimbledon, where tournament kept being exciting to the end.)

I haven't seen much tennis at all...and when I did it was usually flat and dead.

Strangely, I quite liked both Berd's matches - against Kyrgios and a bit against Agut.

Agut is such a good player.

I only saw a few points of Fed-Goffin, not enough to make any comment.

I didn't see Nole-Simon, though I am not surprised by the score as I think Nole is carrying an injury from his last match.

So Nishi has a very good chance as he looked unusually light on his feet and quick with his hands against Tsonga.

Bottom half is a horror.

Atm, Murray is unwatchable for me. He muscles the ball so much and is almost as dull as Raonic in his patterns.

I am disappointed with the youngsters and their attitude.

The only one that looks healthy in the head is Thiem.
But he is a bit heavy on his feet.

Also Pouille...he has about 2 years of challengers or small tournaments in order to piece his game together.

Didn't even get a glimpse of Paire...

And that stupid Verdasco had to lose...just as he played the match of his life vs Nadal.

Most exciting players left early, mainly because of the disbalanced draw where the top half was packed up to the brim with talent...

But at least Fed is still around as well as Nishi, Stan...I am not expecting anything from Monfils although I heard he has a new coach and is making more effort.
I'll believe it when I see it...

Maybe it's just these courts in Melbourne...something is not right.

Fed was just amazing to watch - one of his best matches in a while.  That said, I think he would lose against Novak, and possibly against Nishi too.  His baseline game is not quite as steady as it needs to be.  Against Goffin it did not matter because he was able to avoid too many long baseline rallies, but he would likely be unable to do that against Nole/Nishi.

BTW, commentators have been saying that the courts are playing faster this year, and I have also had the same feeling from what I have seen so far.  That could help a bit.

I liked Fed reply about it....

Q. We haven't seen Novak play like this in a very long time.
ROGER FEDERER: In like what sense?

Q. Hitting a hundred unforced errors.
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah. How much did you see Gilles Simon play? I'm just wondering, because I think people miss the point of him. He plays every match, like, that. He makes you miss. He makes you go for the lines and he runs down a lot of balls. A lot of points end in errors, if you like.

This was five sets. So, of course, there's going to be a lot of unforced errors piling up. The question is if you have 50, 100, at the end of the day it doesn't matter as long as you win.

People just kind of talk maybe -- it's my assumption, I'm not surprised you're asking me. I just feel people talking like he had a horrible day. Of course he can play better, but on the other side, you have somebody who has the fastest legs and he knows exactly what he's doing out there, and it worked almost to the very end. So it was very close for Novak, and he knows that.

Probably the biggest fan ever. It's pure catharsis. Every time.

Only Fed winning Wimbledin and Nole winning RG could come close to Nadal losing.
There is something eternally satisfying in it!

Yes I saw some highlights, but could not glean much from it.

The one I regret not watching was Fed-Dolgo, I saw 12min long highlights...it was superb, best tennis I've seen in a long time.
Goffin is a bit overrated in my opinion.

He's like Diet Coke.

Well, you are preaching to the converted here...I've always loved Gillou!
As I said I haven't seen the match, but in Nole's previous match he struggled with his BH and looked like a back or hamstring injury.

Which matches were they?
Not many comments on any here much, so I gathered nobody's watching.

What I saw is two groups of players: the shotmakers and the ever increasing number of spinny musclers.
And the latter winning. It's depressing.

I was particularly disgusted with Kyrgios against Berdych. He was vile beyond belief. Stan should have decked him last year...

Hopefully we'll have some good QFinals.

Yes, because the bounce is lower, meaning easier to hit flatter.

Nadal Nando was fun to start with. Djoko Simon was not bad either but also Berdych, Nishi and Stan have been playing very well. Not sure what more to ask.

Everyine's got used to spin and strings, the game is really looking like fast badminton.

I actually watched Agassi-Fed USO match from 2005 yesterday...some great FHs back then...where are they all now?

well yes but if you were to watch fed v Agassi kind of tennis for 10 years you'd be bored with it too. What's interesting is teh evolution of the game. It goes through bad and good phases (depending on what one likes) but at least it evolves and changes. Was good (though sad) to see fed challenged, like it was good to see nadal challenged and now Djoko will be challenged.

I personally think Agassi had a poor game compared to guys like Nastase or even Rios.

Yes, Agassi's game was the beginning of the end, just like Seles's.
But their shots were excellent.

Now we have no shots and no games among too many players...just bashers.

No soul.

Tennis is more than just the pleasure of hitting the ball.

It's such a creative game it just fills every atom of me with warm joy. Especially around the net.

It may sound silly, but that's how it is...

But I won't moan any more...

It's just that money has put too much pressure on tennis. It really has become a circus. That idiot Kyrgios should be banned from playing.

No stupid haircuts, tattoos, sleeves, neon shirts, players' names on their shoes, expensive watches strapped on as soon as you shake umpire's hand....Attitudes...

Where is it all going to end?

Yes, that could actually explain his last two matches.
The one I saw, he was a step too short very often.

On lower bounce surfaces you really need to watch the ball and have perfect footwork every time, and that is death for metronome players!

Raonic ha definitely improved his return game.. still not mobile enough for the likes of Djokovic/Nadal.. but against Fed and Stan who don't play the grinding game.. he is very potent.

Funny to watch these two...both tight...Raonic can't volley, Stan can't hit an approach shot...and what is THAT horror in Raonic's mouth!!! Australian Open 2016 - Day 8 (and predictions) 2355573927

1:2!
One step at a time! Winking

Funny to watch these two...both tight...Raonic can't volley, Stan can't hit an approach shot...and what is THAT horror in Raonic's mouth!!! Australian Open 2016 - Day 8 (and predictions) 2355573927

Hopefully, Stan will relax now.
2:2!
Stan taking his BH so early, awesome!!!

Stan missed the easiest forehand pass... and hit it long... 2-4  down...

Time to turn on Stan 'the man' wawrinka mode...

No way was Raonic better...terrible volleying, same old mechanical baseline hitting...Stan it to him on a plate.
Shame.

Yes Stan did...and Raonic didn't. And that's why Raonic was better on the given day... we both will agree neither was playing great, but if the contest is about who is playing worse.. still there will be a winner..

I think Murray will take him out if he survives Tomic... Monfils will be easily dealt with... So a final road for murray is much clearer.

I suppose....Nadal is the one who insists that a better player always wins.

Murray's road to final is so smooth now.. All the remaining in his half can easily be dealt with...

Tomic is the only one just on account of surprise element.

I think this is how Murray has been able to reach so many AO finals.. except for the one where he beat Fed. He gets a kind draw and that too it opens up and he is there just to pick up pieces and move ahead..

I haven't seen Monfils play, but he could deal with Murray, I think.

And then Nole sends him home with a runner-up plate to serve his wife a cup of tea in the morning...

I don't bank on that... grinders can't beat Murray.. definitely not on HC and in bo5.

Laugh Laugh

The winner of AO should come from the other half.. None left on this side deserve their name on the trophy....

Ferru has moved completely under the radar and about to reach another QF... I think he is more relaxed this way..

Every game is going to be struggle for Tomic.. won't be easy for Murray either but that would be due to his own poor play.. Murray shud win this in 3..
