Tomic plays a very nice counterpunching game.
He can really make a player run!
Ideally he would use his talent to play more aggressively, but his crazy father has clearly shattered his self-confidence.

Why do think Tomic has great talent for aggressive game? I've never seen him be an aggressor on any point and any situation.. he always plays safety-first tennis.

Tomic has great hand to eye coordination...probably in top five - hits flat, great hands, great serve, great slice...just does not have the spirit to drive that talent.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:noleisthebest wrote:Tomic plays a very nice counterpunching game.

He would have done much better in previous eras where fitness was not everything.

He does not have a great serve at all.
For 6'5 it is poor.

Good hand-eye yes.. Hits flat but doesn't go enough deep for the lines on most occasions..
Serve is okay but as LS said.. for 6'5" its not good enough... He is like another Delpotro in that regard.
Slice is good but its mostly a defensive slice.. he can't use it to much to construct an attack..
And heart and spirit.. falls well short.. just as Fed said.

Pusher.
But that goes as "proper women's tennis" these days...
I like Keys and Navarro, but they'll probably lose to pushers, as well.

Yes, but the talent is there. I suppose Tomic is a poor athlete.
If Nadal had his talent he'd've won 30 slams.

I think this is not a weak era, we have many very skillfull players, just that playing conditions are favouring fitness, not talent.raiders_of_the_lost_ark wrote:Ferru win in st. sets. This is the real WEAK era.
It's tragic to have Murray as number two.
I know Nole is not the most flairful player but imagine if Murray was ruling the top...

Where on earth do you pluck that from?
Nadal's game of power, crazy spin, speed would get him a lot more than if he had tomic's talent.

But Nadal is watching AO on TV after winning 14 slams and 27 TMS. Nothing can take that away from him. Even if he retires now, I don't think there would be anything left much left for him to ponder about in tennis terms..
He sure is GOAT on clay..

Yes, but you know what I think of Nadal...despite all he won.
I don't even see him as a tennis player...his hands skills are poor.
Toni was a genius to squeeze what he could out of Nadal's only genuine tennis "skill" - his exquisite footwork and movement.
His legs won him all the slams, not hands.
But that's how it is...he was allowed to and helped along the way. He won all he did on pure muscle
If he was any good he'd be able to take the ball early and at least play in the baseline like 90% of players now...but he can't.
His one trick pony time has expired.

He's got 1% talent but missing the 99% of hard work to comlete the success formula.
Mind you, I know how he feels...always did only the bare minimum. Just could not push myself stupid.

Disagree actually. Young Mirka never looked chav. Whereas Fed is way too smart to be a chav, plus he moves elegantly. Can't you spot the difference between Hamilton, Posh/Beckham and Mirka/Federer?
And what do you make of Djoko? his parents?

Whoooa!
I touched a raw nerve...?
Sorry, T but you are wrong. If you have "an open mind" as you like to call it, you may see it.
I find chavs who pretend & sell themselves as something they are not the worst, in fact.
As for "Djoko's parents", that's a bit below the belt, don't you think?
None of us chose our parents.
"Djoko"...he seemed genuine: Shirt-ripping, Nadal you are beatable! the lot.
Never said he was happy for Nadal to win 9 RGs.
He's toned down a bit trying to be the "citizen of the world", a less irritable Number one...not my cup of tea.
I really don't like when peple pretend and say things the don't think. Confirmism is the cheapest lie. And most costly at the same time. Clothes are just a "uniform".

Re: Australian Open 2016 - Day 8 (and predictions)
In whihc way they are selling themselves as something they are not? They are young people who have been given lots of money and thus far they still behave very simply to me. very down to earth actually this is why I fail to see what you mean. It would be so easy to behave stupidly with that much "means" yet they don't.noleisthebest wrote:I find chavs who pretend & sell themselves as something they are not the worst, in fact.
Of course we choose our parents. Or we are their product (which is the same thing in effect). As for "Djoko's parents", that's a bit below the belt, don't you think?
None of us chose our parents.
Strange cause he appears to be the one who was abusing gamesmanship young and the one who made a concerted effort to wash his not so great image. Also the one who when under pressure can lose his temper like he did at Wimby last year against a ball girl."Djoko"...he seemed genuine: Shirt-ripping, Nadal you are beatable! the lot.
Djoko is very much to me the upstart archetype. Nothing wrong with that but certainly the guy who had to prove himself....unlike Federer who like his tennis seems to do everything effortlessy.
That's different. He is the mebassador to all those kids who want to take up the game. It's not about our little "fan wars". I like to think he is above those. And in fact Fed might even be genuinely happy for Nadal, who knows? I think he doesn't care much besides himself and his family.Never said he was happy for Nadal to win 9 RGs....and the rest..
We clearly see it differently there.

I find it disappointing that you felt the need to bog me down in the argument by dragging Djokovic into conversation. That in itself says a lot.
What has Djokovic got to do with Mirka being a chav?
And she is one. Portraying the squeaky image yet taunting Stan during his match against Fed in WTF 2014.
You seem to view the concept through money and I don't.
Never mind.

Then you realized that no, you can’t. …You think that British players should put their money in the UK and learn tennis in Switzerland. …You razor is a Gillette, Your shaving cream is Gillette, but your watch is a Casio… …You think that his game comes from another planet, but that he’s the most human player you know. …You come to a game sporting with pride your latest Nike outfit, and you lose against a guy who’s dressed as a chav and playing with a wooden racket. …You compare him to James Bond: Federer never dies. …You compare him to Elizabeth II for the length of his reign. …For you, Rafael Nadal is just an “athlete”. …For you, he’s the best player of all time.

Re: Australian Open 2016 - Day 8 (and predictions)
I just thought I would reach out here NITB.
I must admit I read more here than I do contribute
Just seen the above argument. I think you want something out of Federer that isn't there. Kind of like an anti-establishment individual who goes against the grain and isn't scared of who they oppose and rub the wrong way. In some ways the sport does need shaking up in that instance, but Federer is perceived as the leader of the game. That's a lot of pressure to carry. He is the face of the sport and arguably the most popular figure the game has seen. With that carries a lot of responsibility (granted not asked for) but for me he does it so well. As Tenez said he isn't into the "fan warfare"
I almost sense you crave a maverick for the sport. One in every sense. A strong personality as well as a strong game.

Simply because I do not see them as chav....nor "high-brow ones". As I see Djoko as certainly more of a chav than the formers, I wanted to have your understanding of what you call a chav.noleisthebest wrote:I find it disappointing that you felt the need to bog me down in the argument by dragging Djokovic into conversation. That in itself says a lot.
What has Djokovic got to do with Mirka being a chav?
And she is one. Portraying the squeaky image yet taunting Stan during his match against Fed in WTF 2014.
You seem to view the concept through money and I don't.
Never mind.
Now there is a difference between being a chav and speaking your mind and not paying attention to what people think of you. Those 3 are quite different. Politicians are not chavs. They just have to use a language which offends least of people or pleases most...depending on which way you want to look at it.
Fed as LK says sees himself as an embassador to the game....and he has done a good job of it. If it was not for his tennis, I would probably never have joined a tennis forum in the first place.
It's just that we have a living Mozart in my favorite sport. That won't happen every day and he is one of those rare genius which does not see to have huge dark side like most have.

thanks for your understanding.
I never thought of it the "maverick" way, but now that you've said it, of course it would be great to have someone at the top with a strong personality as well as a strong game.
Is it too much to ask?
It looks like it is.
I know how I am in my tennis club. People are the same everywhere.
So few care and are prepared to go an extra mile at their cost.
Has Fed done enough?
Yes, by the mere fact he nurtured his talent and persevered all these years. And inspired many.
I am a very grateful recipient.
One of those "cases" who asks herslef "would Fed have liked this BH?"....
Could he have done more?
That is the question only he can answer.

However you want to package it, tennis is up to its eyeballs in doping and dying.Tenez wrote:

And as you suggested potentially "genuinelly liking" and publicly praising and condoning the guy who brought tennis to its knees, (unasked for!) simply sucks.
To you that's not dark, to me it is.
You see it as ambassadorial, I see it as cowardly.
But hey, I love him nonetheless and you know it.

Re: Australian Open 2016 - Day 8 (and predictions)
Nadal is not teh one who brought tennis to its knees. He just improved a way of playing that was already there. If anything Nadal brought millions more people to have a look at our game. Despite his "dark" side he gave a lot to the game, even if he did so unwittingly.
And again, what on earth can he do if the anti doping agencies can't find the smoking gun, or don't want to find the smoking gun? Is he meant to accuse without proof? That woudl be so foolish!
I really don;t understand why you are at him on this. he is there to play tennis.....nothing else. What else should he do? Give all his money to charity too? that woudl be more commandable than accusing others of cheating...where doe we stop?
And finally, and more to the point, where is the chav bit in all that?

Yes he did. Imagine if he never came to the scene.Tenez wrote:Nadal is not teh one who brought tennis to its knees.
As far as I am concerned he only filled Babolat's bank account.Tenez wrote:He just improved a way of playing that was already there. If anything Nadal brought millions more people to have a look at our game. Despite his "dark" side he gave a lot to the game, even if he did so unwittingly.

Yes, he is only a tennis player...but if he wants to be an ambassador than he is not just a tennis player amd has more duties.
I thought you'd never ask!Tenez wrote:And finally, and more to the point, where is the chav bit in all that?
His wife is a chav and so is he with his arrogant attitude towards Djokovic in his early career. Carrying on as if he was an uber race, looking down on his background by calling his return "a slappy shot" not a proper one like he would have played.
Then telling him he needs to get fitter not retire.
And a few saucy comments he made in 2006 when Switzerland played then Sebia and Montenegro in Davis Cup, which are not for public forum.
Just that in your face air of entitlement I noticed when I lived in Switzerland.
And all this time, he was just a very very good tennis player who could not control himself on the court in his early days, looked like a zitty peasant etc...
I am glad he seems to have mellowed.

Just puzzled at your dislike of Federer...but it seems linked to the way he perceive(d) Djokovic.

I don't think it's clear cut. Seems more you want him to speak what's on your mind much rather than his.
Imagine if he did speak up and try and call 'suspected' dopers out or criticise the regime? You can guarantee the finger would be pointed right back and everyone loses credibility. Why speak now when his success if much behind him? Would smack of sour grapes. I don't think he would have the change drive that you crave. You could argue hey look he got Hit for Haiti going, but everyone profits from that. When you speak out against things that have a more underlining current and is about to his the pockets of major investors, it becomes a different scenario. You spoke of anger about how Nadal's career has enriched Babolat, but think of how much Federer alone has enriched Nike!
For me I think Federer has done enough. Maximised his talent and reaped the rewards as has his fans who have delighted in his tennis. So many talents haven't even got going because they don't have the ambition or desire to apply themselves.
Federer has bought a bigger global appeal to the sport. That in itself is a huge achievement. He would argue that the survival of the sport is more important than the structure of the sport.
