Top half is so much more interesting  than the bottom one.

Though they don't make late rounds, I miss Gasquet and Kokkinakis this AO.

There are a lot of bland American and Australian players in the draw atm.
As well as the "useless" ones: Delbonis, Seppi...

His irritability factor has risen sharp this AO: his haircut is disgusting, the sleeveless top, the pathetic, egomaniacal attitude oozing through his frowning, negative face...

I've had a small bet on a dimi - kyrgios double @ around 15-1.  Just 5 quid on it.

Dimitrov has it in him to cause an upset, for sure.

I only bet on those I am more sure about - I didn't bet on any of the other matches.  In fact, my bets on tennis have been pretty good.  Plus, 5 quid gives you an indication as to my conviction (not too great).  I placed 100 quid on Wawrinka beating Djokovic at the FO.

I didn't predict Dolgo to beat Federer - and I don't predict Dimi too either, despite the bet. I merely wasn't going to be surprised - as I won't be if Dimi wins.  But I am saying I find it more likely that Federer will lose than win - and hence the bet.  Ironically, Kyrgios will end up messing my bet up. Laugh

Goffin-Thiem could be interesting...just to see them now and then imagine their game in 5-6 years...

I can't imagine Goffin being much different, but can Thiem.

SBH-ers mature thoroughly in all dimensions - timing, confidence, and above all - creativity., whereas with DBH-ers, they go the other way round - and the more they "improve" the more they look like hybrids.

Anyway...it's been a dull and uneventful week despite Nadal's 1st round exit.

Even Fed-Dimi doesn't hold much promise...there is this feeling of deja vu about it...

Thiem playing some nice baseline tennis.
Goffin is really nothing more than a clean hitting grinder.

Very impressd with Thiem's BH. Sturdy and excelent in defending. How did he manage to lose the first set 6:1?
Probably took him time to get used to indoor conditions.

Saw a few points of Nishi GG Looez, GG started taking the ball early?

Fed has gone off the boil. he led 5/3 0/40 up on Dimi's serve (3 points for double break and set)....and from there terrible tennis. Nearly lost his break in the first set....and is now 1/4 down in the second.

I can't believe how liberal you are with Fed when it comes to giving a 'tired' excuse. You use it even when he is winning. What do want the match to be? Best of 5 points?

Fed lost focus and hence the 2nd set. He also had many chances to break-back but wasted those.

Yes...Dimi plays a milder version of Nole's tennis...(minus th BH), vey good defenve amd deep&fast FH.
Luckily it's Goffin next, so he may have a chance to recover a bit.

What do you think?

He,he...I don't think that's an excus, just an observation, rotla...Fed is nearly 35 playing a young, physical guy...the fact Fed gets tired so early confirms he plays clean, as well.

That's all...the game has changed and we are sad to see such a talent look "old and declined" unfairly.

Bizarre comment Rotla....why do yuo think I am trying to find excuses? I am saying tired while he leads....so not trying to find excuses. And how is "losing focus" any less of an excuse? In both cases none of us is giving Dimi any credit.

And what if fed appears tired to me? Should not I mention it?

Dimi played terrible. Fed poorly and I would not be surprised if he is going to say it in his interview.

I think you give tired excuse a lot easily for Fed than anyone else.

Fed lost 2nd set, due to loss of focus. He didn't really had to play too well to win the 1st and was cruising. This can lead to loss of focus and Fed himself has admitted on multiple occasions. He himself said that his mind can wander mid match especially in the earlier rounds.

Only a bit more focussed and he easily wins the next-2. Nothing like tired at all.

You can mention if you think looked tired, but why does fed appeared tired to you? Did he play grinders for 4+ hours in the earlier 2 rounds?  No, correct.

It wasn't even a long 1st set.

His age plus the fact he seems to be clean makes him tired pretty quickly. It's something I certainly notice. But in any case, it's not "an excuse". I don't look for excuses. In Sydney he lost in the final essentially because he had flu. He said it. Call this an excuse if you want but the fact he has flue. You shoudl know me better by now. I am not looking for excuses. If I were, I'd say he is past his peak since 2006 and that woudl be it. I never used that excuse....unlike others!

Impressive by Federer.  Didn't expect a win to be as comfortable as that against Dimi. He's doing v well considering the draw.

What he really needs, though, is someone to deal with Djok.  It's also not looking good for Kyrgios....

Tenez.... no.  Berdych isn't better at 30 - which is again why he's not doing as much as he once did in tournaments.  These are the facts:

Paris Masters title: 2005.
Wimbledon final: 2010 (when Federer and Nadal were far better than today, as well).

Seppi was playing really good. He was 2-4 down in the TB but managed to win next 4 to go 2 set points up at 6-4* and 6*-5. But squandered them both of e regulation easy UEs. Then again at 6-6 and serving netted an easy ball. And another when on Djokovic's serve to lose the set 7-6(6)

He is a bag of nerves when reaching the end of the set. Loses a lot of times from advantage positions. Djokovi'c level was high generally. Only Nadal makes him look better than he often is.

Rotla....for you

Q. The roof being closed changed the conditions today. You are widely considered to be one of the greatest indoor players of all time. Do you think the roof being closed helps you or do you think it's equal for everyone?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I would think it could be helpful for me. But, you know -- yeah, I don't know. Today didn't come automatically (snapping fingers). I had to push myself, remind myself what to do. These are the great matches to win, I tell you that, because you're not going to feel 100% great every single time when you go out there. But important is to win those matches maybe where you felt a little off almost sometimes.

=====================
Glad Berdych sent Kyrgios packing!

In defense of Tenez- Fed did say to  Courier after the match that he suddenly felt " oddly tired" in the second set, and that he got a second wind at some point.

Feds foot speed is definitely off or declining, but his hands skills are still incredible.

Thanks Truff.

What do you say now Rotla? Is Fed trying to look for "excuses" as well? I believe the specificity of OTF is that we are all mature here and this is just a place where we can say what we see without those typical fanship emotions.

Personally I think Fed did not look much better after the second set but played smartly and secure enough to exploit a poor display from Dimi.

5 DF is also quite a bit from Fed.
