It's official- fed's announcement:

After 2 very successful years, I would like to thank Stefan Edberg, my childhood idol, for agreeing to join my team.  It was a dream come true. Although it was supposed to only be for 2014, Stefan was great and agreed to extend the partnership through this year which I really appreciated.  He taught me so much and his influence on my game will remain. He will always be a part of my team. Severin Luthi, who I have been working with since 2008, will continue to be my main coach and he will be joined by Ivan Ljubicic. Both Daniel Troxler, my physiotherapist and Pierre Paganini, my longtime fitness trainer, will remain part of my technical team.

Well...that feels like a little death of some kind.
Just as Stefan began to breathe with Federer. He suffered so much on that bench...and used to be a reserved outsider in the beginning, remember?

Now...like a neurotic rat, he is abandoning the sinking ship, who would've thought...can't handle the "travelling"!

Will Ljubo's bald head shine some light into Fed's twilight?

Who knows what two die-hard romantics may concoct in 2016!

Good luck boys! tennisball

You a poet? smiley Nice effort. We are certainly turning a page. I woudl not be surprised if Fed was hiring Ljubo to start his coaching career....though I thought he was coaching Rao....is that one over?

Luthi throws some more light (or not) on the latest coaching set-up:
=================================
'We already knew on summer that Stefan would have abandoned us at the end of the year due to the travels and the fact we extended the contact for one more year. The two seasons with him went very well, Roger was satisfied' - Luthi said to Blick.

In these two seasons Federer played more aggressive, is this thanks to Edberg? 'It's impossible to say it, mainly it was about confidence in yourself. As tennis player Edberg was playing aggressive, he encouraged Roger to do like him. It was a great relationship, Edberg was his chilhood idol'.

And what if he was Federer's only coach? 'We spoke so much time about it but it wouldn't be ideal for me. This year I was with Roger for 200 days and if I was his only coach, I would have stayed with him for 40 weeks. With Davis Cup it's not possible. Also Roger listens to different people and it makes him remaining young and alert. Here is why I don't want to be the only coach. Edberg travelled with him in the tournaments only 10 weeks this year, with Ivan we still have to speak about it'.

'Ivan has ended his career three years ago, played against many of Roger's rivals. He is different than his last coaches like Stefan Edberg, Paul Annacone, José Higueras and Tony Roche. He lives in Monte Carlo. If he wants, he can come in Switzerland two or three days (per week), has a good relationship with Roger. The goal is to develop his game, but it's about details. I don't think he'll play two-handed backhand in 2016 (laughs).'

That's cruel! Sad

But crazier things than a 34 year old winning a slam have happened!

S.Tignor take on Ljubicic as Federer's new coach:
==================================
Ljubicic isn’t going to inspire Federer the same way that Edberg, his childhood idol, did. He isn’t going to help add an element to his game, the way the the net-rushing Swede did; Ljubicic, despite being 6’4” and having one of the game’s best serves, was content to spend most of his time patrolling the baseline. Ljubicic isn’t going to have much insight into how to win the biggest matches, the way Edberg, a six-time major winner did; Ljubicic reached one Slam semifinal, at the 2006 French Open, and had a combined 11-21 record against Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka.
==================================

There is also a comment from Annacone that Federer's enviroment t is "great but complicated".

And I think that's probably why Edberg left. He was too fine and silky for the rough Swiss(es) - Fed and Luthi.

That beard Fed grew during WTF was going back to the roots, call it a mid-life pony-tail.

In his heart, Fed was too wild for Stefan.

But meek Ljubo who is no stranger to adversity in life won't be put off easily.
Being "pedigree" free, he'll humbly put up and be happy to give all he can.
I could only think of a decent hitting partner and  an insight into Balkan mentality.

After all, he is Nole's neighbour in Monte Carlo.

Do we underestimate how sensitive and emotional Federer actually is?

Maybe it will be Ljubo's warm, understanding soul that will keep Fed's walk in the wilderness less lonely.

When your peers are all retiring and doubting questions start creepng in...

Just someone to dampen the echo.

Some interesting comments from Luthi:

===================================

I spoke to him (Ljbicic)a lot in Dubai. I told him about my collaboration with Federer and listened to his ideas. It is important that as a team we pull in the same direction," Luthi told Berner Zeitung. Roger chose Ljubicic because he has played against most of his opponents himself.
Roger is to attack intelligently, but he does not just have to rush to net, especially as he is very good on defense. We aim for Roger to have even more variety in specific positions, for example on return.
The question is when he uses what.

Anyone who thinks that Roger is travelling to Paris with no ambitions is mistaken, He will play another clay-court tournament, but which one is not known. Roger does not like to withdraw from tournaments because of the fans—to add one, however, is not a problem.
Roger was never injured, we could run through the program and are fully on schedule."

I like the bit where he says Roger is not going to RG without ambition.

Yes it is pretty good information. I also thought that Federer was too aggressive v Djoko. Clearly he has too but felt a tiny bit too much rushed if not panicky.

I guess it is much more physical than we even think (and I know most here really grasp the physicality of this sport). Yet Fed cannot win if ridiculously aggressive. he had the right balance v Murray at Wimbledon but we know he cannot reproduce that a couple of days later (Wimby final).

That's why I cannot see him win another slam...unless he seriously takes "something" he hasn't so far.

Yes, he was very aggressive against him in that first WTF match which he won.
I know how tough and stressful it must have been for him to play like that, but it was sublime to watch...and really on that slow court he had no choice which we saw in the final.

I thought Fed hasn't got the max out of that bigger frame on his FH.
BH - it has really stabilised it, but FH - I feel there is still room for improvement.

He mustn't allow himself to engage in those mid court exchanges, esp with Djokovic...it stabilises Djokovic but drains Federer.

Even in that match against Nishi which he won but went to unnecessary 3rd set...he loved hitting fast with him, but it simply drained him for the final.

A slam does look like a miracle, but I believe in them!

You just never know. Big Grin

It's a good point. I noticed however that he injects more cross court spin than before but he coudl do with more....to force more running. But it is difficult to catch up those who started to play with it. He only has a year and a half of full use if that...the others have 15 years of it. It's just too late for Fed.....shoudl have made the move way earlier....that woudl have brought him 5 more slams probably.

Never aligned for him since he was born? What nonsense. Compared to what? He's a multi millionaire who was born to privileged parents.  He is the most successful and talented player to have ever lived.  He's loved all around the world.  He has 4 kids, and they're also 2 sets of twins.

Compared to what?  He's had a better life than 99.9999% can dream of!
