The Perfect Player Ever
Time to revisit this old debate. Don't quite agree to all of it. But I thought it was funny they created a "flexibility/Elasticity" section.....and of course gave it to Djoko. No-one in the past would have thought flexibilty could be a weapon.
Out of memory:
First serve: Karlo : Agree difficult to argue against that one.
Second serve: Pete. Yes certainly for his time. I'd put Karlo again actually there. Give him 1990s balls and conditions and Karlo is everybody's nightmare.
FH: Gonzalez....mmmmhh....great on a hot day but Fed to me has still the best FH by a mile.
BH: Stan. No. DHBH are way better. Nalby and Nishi and soon Chung.
Returns: Djoko. Yep. Thanks to mouvement. Though to me Fed returns better the fatest serves. I doubt for instance that Fed would have had as much trouble as Djoko v Kevin at Wimbledon.
DropShot: Fed. Yes
FH Volley: Fed. Yes.
BH Volley: Edberg. Mmmhhhh not sure. Fed for me again simply because Fed has better eye/hand coord which is smply crucuial for volley game.
Mouvement: Fed. I guess they mean footwork....and that I 'd agree.
Speed on court: Monfils. Probably. With Djoko for sure.
Defensive passing shot. Nadal. Yes though Djoko and Murray are not bad either.
Mental Strength: Nadal. Nope can't agree with that. And the funny thing is that he loses a few of the matches they show as examples. Wilander/federer for me.
Flexibilty/Elasticity????: Djoko. Certainly. this section was created specifically for him.
Shot of Genius: Federer....well there again I guess this section was created specifically to fit Federer in.

Re: The Perfect Player Ever
For me, the perfect player has all the shots. I never see them isolated.
And they come from hand to eye coordination.
Not the height, or an extraordinary physical advantage.
Also, there are too many artificial categories there...
Serve, FH, BH, volley...that's it for me.
No hands - no perfect player.
The perfect player is perfect in all playing conditions, surfaces, racquet sizes and string technologies.
We've had some wonderful players with great strengths. But there has always and only been one peRFect player.

Re: The Perfect Player Ever
yes but imagine if Fed had Karlo's first serve? Or Stan's power BH without losing every other aspect of his BH? That's the idea.

I am not sure Ivo's serve would be as good if he was Fed's height.
I'd also never swap Fed's BH for Stan's.

Well we are sure it would not but again that's not quite the point. It's a bit ;ike building the best football team....but in tennis.noleisthebest wrote:I am not sure Ivo's serve would be as good if he was Fed's height.

He, he...for me that's genetic modification!
The way I see it whose shot's I'd like to have if I could...and I'd have Fed's BH over anyone else's.
Not sure about the serve, still.
The clip showed Karlovc bombing them past Berdych, not against good, returners.

These things are often mutually exclusive; you can't have Ivos's serve (which demands height) and the greatest movement, for example.
I would say to make the perfect player you start with Federer, perhaps make a DHBH (urghhh!) to counter high balls......... and you've more or less arrived. If flexibility must be there then take that from Djokovic.

See you are not even considering Fed's BH. And you yourself debated how Fed's BH is better than Stan's.
What about the much acclaimed Gasquet. He deserves a mention at least.
If DHBH is considered, Davydenko wasn't bad at all.
Stan's SHBH can do all a SHBH can plus what all DHBH can plus resist all constant barrage of attacks in attempts to break down. It can falter, but its more to do with Stan's losing focus or getting nervous.
Its the greatest BH ever created.

If Fed had DHBH he might be losing less to Nadal or maybe not at all. But he then would have lost a lot more to other players like Roddick, Nalbandian, Davydenko...even Hewitt... the h2h which he completely owns.

Indeed! It was a way of fictionally "building" such player.bogbrush wrote:These things are often mutually exclusive; you can't have Ivos's serve (which demands height) and the greatest movement, for example.

Having said that, we have guys like Murray, build like rugby players, running faster than Federer and outlasting short build like Ferrer. So we are certainly getting right into a Frankeinstein era. And Djokovic is one of the greatest freak. 6'2" is quite tall! Yet he runs like a gazelle and outlasts everybody else while being able to kiss his bum at the same time.

Johnny Mac's perfect player:
===========================
According to John McEnroe, this is the complete player:
Serve - Sampras
Forehand - Federer
Backhand - Djokovic
Net game - Nadal
Mentality - Nadal
===========================
Surely, he cannot be serious!!!

No, he really isn't. That's why he's having his worst ever year. As for Nadal at the net, McEnroe is on drugs.

Where was lobs as a category? I'd have given that one to Murray.

Wilander's were excellent. They were called "attacking lobs". I think he prodced many more than Murray but players were rushing to the net then.....so it was natrally more used.
